Bit more help please
Discussion
After much deliberation and faffing around on my part I have decided that the car I want is an S. I don't really know much about these cars and so I am sure that I will bug the life out of you lot here!
Would anyone be able to tell me the lenght and width of an S as well as giving me an approx price for a new hood. Also is there anywhere I can get a idea of the models available and engine sizes etc.
And then the search begins. I havent been this excited for ages!!!!!
Thanks
Steve

Bug the life out of us all you want, we were in your shoes before.
You know now you have the hook in your mouth, there's no turning back.
What do you mean about dimentions, get a bigger garage.
You say new hood, have you found a car that need a new one, there's a hood/roof on ebay right now, not cheap. They are made of GRP and covered
in fabric, any monkey could do it.
Engine sizes, S1 2.8 same engine as 2.8 injection Capri.
S2,3 &4. 2.9 same as later granada scorpio things.
SV8 thats what the boys buy, more power 3.9ish ltr engine
they need it....
Damn, i want one.
You will love it here. You will only get problems, that you will get with
any 20 yr old car.

The 3 important things are condition, condition & condition
If you can work a spanner it helps, it you can work a welder you're an S series God!
PS Hoods are for girls. Even a new one will leak a bit.

If you are serious, you will probably want the "Bible".
Get in touch with your local TVR Car Club Region (Essex?) and get some advice on living with an S from the owners.

Thanks for the replies. I dont have a garage but I do have a drive but just need to make sure that the car will fit where want it to go (under a cover of course) hence the length and width. I am OK with spanners in so much as I can do a service but anything else major I will try with a bit of research and guidance.
I have seen one I quite like http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1199841.htm hence the new hood. I understand chassis etc needs to be good but even if a bit of work needs doing I dont mind if I will get a nice car as a result. It will be my 2nd car and I will only do about 2000 miles Pa.
One other question:
If you could give just 1 piece of advice to a S owner what would it be?
Cheers
Steve

one piece of advice to a prospective S owner has to be check the chassis and trailing arms (particularly important on an S1 as the trailing arms are difficult to replace)... the outriggers of the chassis - the corners behind the front wheels are the most likely to be bad... if they are good then you are onto a winner for tha price.Cheers
Steve
once you have one you will be smiling as long as you are moving

The outriggers usually start to rust just behind the front nearside wheel. You need to feel along the top of the tube that runs along under the door (check the offside too). Trailing arms are available, but only for the later cars. However, Adrian Venn offers a rebuilding service for the earlier types.
why don't you buy this one, its a bargain for this condition !!

Start bid £500, is that just for the front indicators ?

The price looks spot on and its just down the raod....but the colour of the car/interior/roof just look.........odd?The one on eBay looks good. But you would have to buy a new hood, white!!! Would you drive it with that on?
I brought my S2 in May for £3K. Went for an S2 as it has electronic fuel injection (S1=mechanical) 10bhp or so more than an S1 (when new) electric windows.
If I had some more money then I would have brought an S3, all of the S2 advantages plus longer doors for easier access and egress. Wait till the first time you fall out of an S1/2, quite amusing for the gathered crowds.
Best decision I ever made to get an S though. Can't stop smiling while driving it. Sounds good even when sitting at the traffic lights. Don't worry about it having a CD Radio fitted you will never turn it on.
Echo comments above, the chassis being non rusty is probably the most important thing. I would recommend getting a current S owner to go with you to have a look. I'm sure someone in this PH forum would offer to help if you post in, we're a friendly bunch.

Life and TVR ownership are full of compromises. Think of the hood as a blank canvas - you could dye it any colour you like...
Primrose yellow... maybe not
Pillarbox red... don't think so
Dayglo orange... not quite
Wedgewood blue... doubtful
Brown tan... now that could work with interior and exterior!
Or just plain black - and you'll add a grand to its value straight off.
Have fun,
Graham

What about this, its a bit non standard but seems good value. I cant copy and paste the link, damm. Its on autotrader and is a black S1 with electric door opening?????
Well, what do you want us to say? It's on Pistonheads classifieds as well, but there's not much to go on that isn't down to personal taste. If you like the look of it, handle-less doors, footwell air vents and all, go check it out! The paint looks a bit orange-peely, the discs look a bit corroded, the engine bay looks tidy. Being on the Vehicle Condition Alert Register means it's probably been written off, so you need to find out why, and make sure it's been properly repaired (and perhaps why it hasn't been formally inspected and removed from the register).
Personally, I would go for a straight unmolested example, but then I'm a boring old f**t with little imagination...
