Hi.

I'm after a bit of help.

I'm about to move into a flat with 3 others. We need to decide before we get there who is getting what room. But we are each in different parts of the country so can't meet up until we move into flat. We will be arriving at different times so need to know before then what room we are in.

How can we fairly decide who gets first pick without meeting up in person?

But we won't meet in person until me arrive at flat. But we arrive at different times and we want to be able to move into the "correct" room and not have to move again. And each room has a different rent attached!

An online version of drawing straws that is independently verified would be good!

What are you all studying?

Allocate room size according to the usefulness of your chosen subjects. The purer, and more useful subjects, such as maths, engineering, physics, etc. get first pick.

Sociologists and the like can live in the cupboard.

Looking at your profile, you're onto a winner.

Assuming you're all going on the same day, surely the person there first can just go to the pub for a few hours? Works to your advantage too, get there late enough and they'll all be so pissed they'll settle for the sttier rooms because they'll be so desperate to hit the sack!

Out of interest, where would accountancy fit onto that scale?

auction the rooms - richest wins.

Who will pay £1,£2,£3 etc to get first choice? etc etc
the remaining 3 get a slight reduction in rent

Who will pay £1,£2,£3 etc to get second choice? etc etc
the remaining 2 get a slight reduction in rent
etc

you could even set it up on ebay by allowing approved bidders only.

In my day the first student to turn up got the best room.

Darwin works. Stop being so bloody democratic and get on with it!

On the other hand, you would be giving the largest bedrooms to those least likely to get to share them with anyone...

What's been missed in that picture is the Engineering student who has walked off and set-up his X-Box in the biggest room already.
