Every day it's the same.
Why do they do it?
They go jogging and sprain their ankle...they then proudly hobble into the office and tell everyone of their woes. They go jogging at lunchtime and come back looking like they're only just clinging onto life. They play football/hockey/tennis/squash/whatever and sprain something...etc etc
Why not just go for a nice walk instead?
It would seem any form of fitness exercise is actually quite bad for your health. So why the hell do they do it?
I'm just glad I'm 'naturally' perfect.

Sounds as though no one else really needs to love you, as you do that very well yourself Why do they do it?

Oh I don't know, maybe it's to do with the fact that on average people who partake in regular excerise and a controlled diet live longer? Many other benefits as well physically and mentally. Why do they do it?

We only get one chance at life, why not take the appropriate steps to extend and improve it.
Of course you could just sit on your arse judging other people from that high-horse you're on.

I agree we should eat a good varied diet and get some excercise (go for a walk?), but it's when you go beyond that and start damaging parts of your body that I don't understand. I really don't think you'll live longer as a result - and what proof is there that you do?
I don't think a sprained ankle is life-threatening these days. So overall, you'll live longer... but with a limp in winter. And I don't think a walk is enough. It's what you tell the obese to get them off their arses as they can't bear the thought of wearing lycra and pounding the streets for 2 hours. Ultimately, you need to elevate the heart rate continuously for 30 minutes, 3 times a week, I understand.

Don't fancy jogging much but some sports are damn good fun. Mountain biking for example is great fun and usually free. The exercise part of it is a bonus. Why do they do it?

It's not just about fitness where sport's concerned though. It's a hobby, something people do for pleasure. As someone already mentioned, activity is good for your mental wellbeing as well as physical. I'm currently on the waiting list for an operation to rebuild/replace a torn ligament in my knee, so far it's meant I haven't played basketball for six months and I likely won't play for at least another year. For a while I felt rubbish because I wasn't getting that fix of exercise, I've recently got more into cycling and it has really helped. Also, how much walking would you need to do for it to produce the same results as regular jogging, swimming etc? How much spare time do you have?
I once apologised to my doctor for taking up his time with yet another sports injury. He said he'd far rather treat me for sports-related injuries now than inactivity-related diseases later.
I know this - Having been both a couch-potato for whom walking was excercise, and also one who trained every day, I can say that being the latter causes occasional periods of acute pain but the rest of the time is great, but being the former causes every day to feel like chronic cack in comparison.

I've done damage to myself a few times out mountain biking. I could just ride along fire trails to get the same physical fitness benefits, but then I'd be missing out on all the mental and emotional fitness benefits that come from pushing myself to try routes I've not previously had the balls for, or to nail one a bit faster than last time.
Life without risk isn't really living.

What a bizarre thing to write. Of course their are sports injuries, and I am not sure that pro level sport, with cortisone injections and suchlike is the best idea. It may be that the people in your office, are trying to get fit, which is a process. When you are actually fit, it does get easier.
The chemical release in your body is very beneficial to your health, it removes stress, reduces blood pressure, removes the pressure to starve your body of natural fats and protein that dieting alone can do. Improves Circulation and builds a healthy heart, reduces the risk of lower bone density in old age, etc etc etc
I could go on - walking has many of these benefits for sure, just takes longer. Plus many people enjoy the competitive side of sport.

Assuming someone eats a well balanced diet, is generally quite active and not over weight - I'd bet they'd live a lot longer than the fitness fanatic!
Look at animals - it's the ones that spend all day chilling out that live the longest!
But what an awful way to 'Live' life. One of my friends spends most of his time doing nothing. He is either chilling or sleeping. What a waste of life!Look at animals - it's the ones that spend all day chilling out that live the longest!
