Hi Chaps,

Put my engine and box in last night and the gearbox is very close to the top chassis rail. I will have to cut the box section to get a breather pipe in, but there is about 1mm clearance. Is this normal? I could machine a bit off the box to aid the issue, but I'm not sure if this is normal. Also drilling a fairly large hole in the box section must weaken it. Any thoughts or advice? Gearbox is a G50/03.

Many thanks.

Martin

The whole lot will settle when the mounts start to squish so don't worry about the clearance. You won't end up with much more than that under the sump.

I also had to drill through the cross member for my breather fitting. Drilled with enough clearance for a long series socket. Nothings broken after five years.

Martin: Is that a SBC or a LS motor? I have a G50 03 with a LS in the GTR and the C/L of the breather is .8 inchs in front of the cross bar. Lee

I drilled and tapped the side plate with the two hex' screw heads to fix my breather pipe . This way with the plate removed I didn't get swarf in the 'box . Also this plate/hole is a convenient place to put a hose in to refill the 'box with oil . Also I filed the top of the 'box to get a good clearance .

Thanks chaps. Like your idea Frank as I will not need to drill the chassis rail then. Anyone else done this? Can't see it being a problem...

Thanks Mart

Yes - Stuart's is like this. It's very handy for refills.

When I bought my G50/03 from the factory some 9 years ago, it came with this very modification already done.

the diamond plate is very thin and tapping the aluminium is not giving a very reliable thread, here my solution that
is another way to do it. It provides a good 10mm of aluminium.

Thanks Spatz,

I am looking at making a thicker plate that I can drill and then tap, but your solution is also very good. What is the bolt in the middle of the plate for? Was that the first solution?

Thanks for the help,

Mart

the bolt is closing the hole from the first attempt after factory advise, which turned out to be not good. The thread was gone immediately when I tried to tighten the line.

The simple solution would have been to just fit a backnut on the other side of the plate.

A typical over engineered solution would be to re-design and re-manufacture the cover plate with an additional island in the center...guess why my build has taken 3 and half years so far rolleyes.

Design

End result - pre polishing and anodising
