Just trying to match their advertising to the target audience I would think. Might have been easier and less embarrassing to just take a second photo with different models.

How many black people are there in Poland? If, as I suspect, it's very few, then putting a black guy in the advert would probably mark it out as foreign and bring with it the associated negative perceptions - most notably that this will be a one size fits all product, with little local support. It's lazy of Microsoft not to shoot a new advert, but definitely not racist.

'Others have suggested the ethnic mix of the Polish population may have played a part in the decision to change the photo.'

Genius!

There are not many negroes in Poland, therefore having negroes on the box is pointless. And the reverse is of course true. Adapt to your market, simples.

It looks like fairly amateur photoshopping too. Okay, that's kind of a given seems he has the wrong hand, but his head looks a bit out of place too!

Interesting question though. I guess we have the opposite here, where very diverse advertising (particularly for government initiatives etc.) goes out to an audience who are largely of the same race.

I spent a few days in Poland last year and I didn't see a single black person. I even asked a local about this and they couldn't recall when last they'd seen a black either.

That conversation must have been interesting.

Young kid in ad dep: "I can 'shop the picture, it's like he was never there."

Ad Manager: "Yeah good idea, we'll never get caught."

...Rather than shopping in the white head to make the person look like they are a stroke victim!!!

He's not exactly sitting at a natural angle is he!

or did this all come about because the only people capable of using photoshop to any level of skill don't go near Microsoft in the first place?

Did you see any Asians there as they didn't bother photoshopping him out of the pic. Can only guess there is an acceptable amount of them in Poland.

Would this have caused the same amount of fuss if a white man had been replaced with a black man???

Probably due to the general Polish attitude that all blacks are a lower class.
