Before Richard baffles you

OTRCAI - Over the radiator cold air induction. Gets nice cold ambiant air into the engine without letting the surrounding hot air from the engine bay pre heating it.

MAFFless tune means the MAF (Mass Air Flow Meter) on the inlet pipe is removed from the engine ECU control and the car is tuned to run against a set number of enviromental parameters. If the temperatures vary wildly then you can tune it to run best in the middle.

The idea of a MAFF is good as it optimises the engine tuning on the fly to make best use of the fuel used accoding to yr driving style and ambiant temperature etc etc but if you use the car for one thing like commuting then take it to the strip for some RWYB the engine ECU will still be running the engine on an economy map and not a performance one which a MAFFless tune would give you all the time.

Cheers for that , im looking for a few more BHP not looking to drag it , ive thought about a Wortec exhaust and headers remap and maybe a cam . So im guessing the mafless tune and the otrcai is more for the serious speed merchants ?

Cam, MAFFless tune, headers and full system and an OTRCAI are all ideal as a combination - Richard will welcome you with puckered lips for mentioning a cam and nothing about FI. smile

Started ok then went of the rails a bit smile

A MAF directly measures airmass. And calculates how much is in each cylinder by division by RPM.

Mafless uses the fallback setup in every GM ECU which uses intake temp, manifold pressure, volumetric efficiency and rpm to determine the mass in each cylinder. So as you can see intake temps is included so it can handle whatever variation you care to mention. If it doesnt handle it properly its not mafless fault but the tuners fault for not tuning mafless mode properly.

Not sure what you mean about economy tune either. Fundamentally the idea of both methods is to deliver the correct amount of fuel at each point in time. Mafless will remove an intake restriction as well as mafless being much faster to low throttle transistions and hence give better throttle response. So overall there is an advantage to mafless. BUT it takes more time and skill to tune accurately and needs adjusting each time you alter the volumetric efficiency of the engine. The Maf will to a large extent adjust itself.

Still a bit stumped ? is there a difference between a cold air induction system and a performance air intake system and if so which would be best to work alongside the Wortec cat back and headers a remap and maybe a cam . Not too techy please .confused

I would say "cold air induction system and a performance air intake system" are diffrent names for the same thing. On the older cars (Monaro) to put an Over The Radiator Cold Air Intake, you normally needed to go MAFless and remove the Air flow Meter (MAF) because of the space involved between the front of the throttle body and the size of the air flow meters. Nowadays on the VE series cars (VXR8) I believe you can run with or without the MAF and still have an Over The Radiator Cold Air Intake.

Hehe, Motomk is in Oz!

Yeah call them what you like what you want with an good intake is airtemp as close to ambient as possible and zero restriction.
This can easily be measured with a scan tool against ambient temp and pressure at key on.

An otrcai generally delivers intake temps 6*C colder than the standard format. It also usually is less restrictive due to a freer flowing and larger filter area.

What brands of OTRCAI are you guys using on the VXR8? Have you bought in UK or from Oz/USA? Any experiences of the best ones or ones to avoid?

Cheers

www.otrcai.com Donk's looks the best for fit and finish, also good results.

Mine is supposed to be highest performance, but is an arse to fit and remove as you have to pull off the front body moulding.

Hi Donk it looks great , have you any other mods and can you install this on its own or does it support other tuning parts . By the way is your PAPER !! VXR badge on the engine cover ok mines peeling off think its a really naff way to finish off the cover with .

Other mods, not yet. had the car over two years now. I cannot make my mind up which direction to go, charger or cam or both!.........I feel a cam is the way as I do not want to change engine internals plus I do not mind a lumpy idle as long as it is still drivable. It took me a year to change the exhaust (walkinshaw) plus I have a couple of exhaust cut outs which are programable,(lots of noise!!)I have badged it as an HSV and given it the GTS style paintwork on the spoiler legs and front wing gills. The otrcai is easy to install and my badge is still intact....the metal one on the front panel has lost the HSV symbol though.............Chris.

Looks like there's nothing for an 05 VZ (otrcai)
I want to keep the MAF, but people Iv'e called say just use a K*N panel filter!
So can I get one in the UK? where and how much?
Xmas is coming...
