golf 5 aircon

We have a 2005 Mk5 Golf GTI and the aircon has packed up - horrid screeching from compressor and now nothing. I understand that this is common. Anyone else here experienced this and what is the best way to proceed? Presumably due to age the chance of goodwill from VW is nil??

I had this problem last month with a 2006 mk5 GTi, it too was out of warranty.

Just kick and scream with VW customer services, mention the fact that there is a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) for the aircon, tell them you are aware of other owners with the same problem who have benefitted from VW good will and hey presto, you should get the parts for free and pay 50% of the labour charge.
