Check tyres, pressures, bulges. Swap back to front, is problem still there etc.?

If still there then possibly something suspension related, best get it checked out.

If you're lucky TT will post up a better checklist than I biggrin

Never had that problem I'm afraid. Purely speculatively, it could be the 4wd system if you've not changed your tyres yet? I'm not sure how it reacts to different circumferences (even if the tyres are the same size according to the sidewalls, if they're worn differently then that may cause problems).

hiya,
put new bridgstones on the front,
the rears are still khomos with about 5,,6mm of tread,
its like a flutter that you feel,
sort of thing you,d get if you were pullin away in a high gear,
funny its on the throtle as well, maybe an engine mount,,

aka8, have you still got yours,
all the best billy

Could be tyres or distorted wheel hubs, had that on jags at that speed, and an A8 is very similar to a X350 XJ, but never noticed it on any of the A8's I've worked on. Could be an engine mount if it feels like the front of the car is moving side to side rather than the shimmy you get with incorrectly balanced tyres.

IS it petrol or Diesel?? If its diesel, It could be...............

The TDI A8's, (the petrol one's might too but I dont think do) have electro-harmonic engine and gearbox mounts. That is to say there is a little solenoid inside the mount which is pulsed by the engine ECU in the exact opposite frequency to the engines natural vibration. It knows how to do this from signals from the knock sensors, (apparently).

Any way, although pretty common now, back in 2002 ish this was new technology and like all new technology it didn't work. So they all failed and the solenoids all shorted out internally, and eventually put the engine light on, or at least left a fault code in the ECU.

There was then a technical bulletin to removed and insulate the wiring to the engine mounts to prevent the code being logged. It was deemed, after some investigation, by Audi Germany the benefits of the electronic mounts were so minor, very few people could feel the difference, so rather than replace them, the wiring was disconnected and insulated instead.

I don't know obviously, but I'd bet your electronic mounts are either not working as the solenoids have failed internally, or they have already been disconnected as per the technical bulletin.

hiya tame tech,
wat i will do is replace the rear tyres,
that will eliminate the tyre issue as the fronts are
5 mins old.
its a 4.2 petrol,
wen you pull off from start, [tryin to describe the feel on the throtle pedal]
its like a vibration under foot and go,es as the car goes on,
matching feeling on the steering, very slight,
steering is very possitive, no probs,
there is no side to side movement ,
occurs wen you are slowing down, round 25 ish on the steering wheel,
like a tinggling effect, hard to describe,
good info on mounting sensors, wat next,

how do i know if this applies to this car,
ta billy

Disregard the engine mounts as there is no side to side feeling and its a petrol.

Could be wheel balance, did it do it before the front tyres were replaced (5 mins ago) Failing that could be warped discs, but you would get it worse braking from higher speeds, so for me steering and braking sensation sounds like distorted hubs.

We use to see it all the time on jags, is caused by tyre fitters gunning up the wheels to tight, or they can get damaged when the wheels bearings are pressed out and the Hub reused.

Personally I'd live with it, but to fix distorted hubs, you need to replace the front wheel bearings and use new hubs on reassembly.

FYI, By hub I mean the flange the wheel bolts to, the bit the wheel bolts screw into.

hiya tame t,
its defo not hubs or bearing related,
wen you engage drive and move, its there straight away,
braking at any speed is bang on,central and quiet
so the discs are ok, no wharping.
it was there before i changed the tyres, i put it down to
the rubbish that was fitted to the front,
i,ll change the rear tyres and see what that brings,
as you say, live with it,
i can tell you anythink about 1960,s jags but these new era
cars are beyond me,
had no luck with the gearbox oil change,
the nearest one could only do dsg so its a trip to liverpool,
you would think audi could come up with nozzle pack that you could just change
to suit them all,

ta for your advice, billy

I've still got mine and about to replace the tyres. I have 20" OE alloys on mine and it's always been fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport 2 tyres, which cost a fortune at £280-ish a corner. I see you can get Dunlop Sportmax for £180 a corner but I'm not sure if it's worth cutting the corners, particularly given that I have a brand new unused one as my spare.

Off thread, prices for 4.2s seem to have rebounded recently. I'm swapping mine later this year for either an S5 or an M3 CSL

Glad to hear you're getting on well with it, they do everything well and don't seem as thirsty as people expect. MMI is far more intuitive than iDrive or others I agree.

Tyres have some life left in them, but I want to get them replaced before they're close to the indicators. I'd only mention tyres in an advert if they're brand new, otherwise it's not really a relevant item unless they're very worn. Has anyone tried any different tyres on the 20" wheels? I've only used the Michelins and like them, but they are incredibly expensive.
