For instance, I'm told car hire is a no-no as its to dangerous to be doing day trips/excursions in a rented car as you'll stick out as a tourist and leave yourself open to all sorts of nonsense.

What about those big-arse mexican spiders - am I likely to bump into one?

Stay out of the jungle - you might get your head cut off.

Playa Del Carmen is relatively safe walking about during the day although a couple of mates who popped in a bar down a side street were approached by a guy who offered them two fifteen year old prostitutes.

If in Playa you will be harrased by people selling you stuff, just be firm but polite - one guyt shouted over to me 'hey buddy come and buy, i wanna rip you off' - i had to admire his honesty lol.

Dont be alarmed by the pick ups with armed police in the back doing road checkpoints the're there to ensure the tourists safety.

My sister went everywhere by bus and she was fine, i.e. Tulum etc.

Always tip, even if its only a couple of bucks, it goes a long way.

You'll love it mate its a great place and the Mexicans are a fantastic race of people who will do anything to help.
Have a good 'un
