Thinking of spending a few days maybe a week either up the lakes or in bonnie Scotland, can anyone recommend a reasonably priced holiday lodge/cabin for two of us.

It seems a minefield out there and whilst i know a few round Cornwall want some advice on holidays in the lakes or in fact Scotland.

Thanks in advance chaps. thumbup

Well it will have to be tough, It is the UK after all. If the missus wants sunshine we'd have to go abroad and she can pay for it. times are tough at the moment.

So its either the Lakes or Kerbedge. biggrin

Can highly recommend www.langdale.co.uk.

Not the cheapest place in the world but if it's raining there's plenty to do. 2 restaurants and 3 bars on site. 2 country pubs in walking distance (Britannia & Wainrights) plus another Restaurant (Elterwater). Indoor pool, sauna, jacussi, steam room, gym, snooker room, kiddies play room, babysitting service, Tennis courts, beauty salon, etc.

But best of all you're right in the middle of the Langdale Valley, one of the most picturesque spots in the Lakes. There are 2 weeks worth of walks outside the door and plenty of mountain biking.

It's a Timeshare place and people rent out their self catering lodges for a week, mid-week or weekend period, via the website. The Lodges are well appointed and you can do all your own cooking if you don't fancy eating out. Or you can just stay in the hotel - they do last minute deals sometimes.

My family went there for years, but having now bought a cottage round the corner, just pop in for the odd morning coffee now. In fact we're off there tomorrow - looking forward to my first pint of Bluebird at The Britannia already.

Or you could try www.wheelwrights.com, who rent out lots of cottages in the area - Elterwater.

Fair enoughsmile You'll find the farther west you go the cheaper it gets, most tourists are reluctant go more than 40 minutes from the motorway.

The weather is spectacularly vile at the moment, though, 12c, 35mph winds and lots of rain. Check if tou are in doubt...

Your telling this to an Oldham lad here, it can be baking hot 12 miles away in Stockport with people sipping their pina coladas (or Fosters) yet here in Oldham we'll be freezing our nuts off with only our sheep to keep us warm. biggrin

A bit of blustery weather doesn't bother me.

There's a reason it's the "Lake District" not the "Puddle District" or the "Dry Valley District". Lots of rain is one of the best bits about the Lakes (having lived in the area for 20 years or so).

As for places to stay, the old quarry cottages above Glenridding are nice, but apart from that (and the Drunken Duck Inn thumbup) I have no recommendations as I rarely need somewhere to stay.

There's a few nice places around Borrowdale, some of them quite remote some of them adjacent to the main road to keswick etc. Take a tent, it's far more interesting smile

Yup, I know all about lakes, a couple of inches of rain a day makes them appear all over the placesmile The third dismal summer since 2006 does rather challenge senses of humour. You don't come here for the wonderful climate, the scenery and walks will do.

hasn't been that bad this summer, either that or we're spectacularly lucky. Hiked half a dozen weekends on the trot and aside of last weekend which was biblical when at cloud level, we've had largely blue skies and sunshine. smile

The Caterham nearly drowned on midsummers day 2008 - torrential rain and flooded Keswick-Ambleside road hehe Bow waves over the bonnet and breaking on the windscreen!

Have a Google for Wauchope Cottages, in the Scottish Borders.

Very well equipped cottages, but not near anything apart from a huge forest. Roughly halfway between Jedburgh and Hawick (~20 minutes' drive).
