This poll follows a heated pub debate and, as such, is of utmost importance!

What makes a good trilogy/quadrology and which is the best?

In my humble opinion there needs to be some consistency in terms of quality, and each individual part needs to contribute to the overall whole (Bourne, LoTR). Weaker final parts may detract from the full experience but what if the first two are very strong (Godfather, Terminator)?

I for one am not keen on the 'let's add another part years later' school of film making (IJ, DH, Terminator again).

So on reflection I am going for LoTR with an honourable mention for the Bourne.

I await your votes and comment with interest...

Alien was let down badly by 3 IMHO.
Terminator the same.

Star Wars, well, I'm a child of that era, so it's Star Wars for me... I do however think that the first three slightly let down the story with over emphasis on CGI etc.

Back to the Future trilogy?

Not strictly a trilogy, but I'd go for:

A Fistful of Dollars
For a Few Dollars More
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Given the requirements laid out by the OP, it was between Star Wars, LotR or Bourne.

Very difficult decision but I've given my X to Bourne since I enjoy that genre of film.

I've added Back to the Future but I can't add anymore as there's no room in the poll.

What's a "quadrology"?

Sounds like "codology" to me.

I had heard of "quadrilogy" - although that's as dumb sounding.

I'd go for "Back to the Future" or "Indiana Jones" for consistency over three films.

I say 'tetralogy'.

Admittedly not so catchy, but technically correct!

• noun (pl. tetralogies) a group of four related literary or operatic works.

I'd guess that should include films.

Star Wars followed by Godfather (very strong first pair followed by a weaker third instalment, very much so for Godfather).

May I also add the wildcard of Friday, Next Friday and Friday After Next?

Thats how I roll

The Bourne were consistently good, as long as you could handle the shaky-cam vision... which I could wink

I went for Star Wars as all the rest have at least one bad film to their name. Never really thought of LotR as a trilogy though, it's more one film in three parts
