It needs to support an ipod Touch 2nd Gen. Things like this Denon:
http://www.denon.co.uk/site/frames_main.php?MID=3&...

only seem to support earlier models of iPods & iPhones (I think Apple changed the power line on the dock port).

The priorities are iPod 2nd Gen Touch dock (with charging) and DAB. The networking side (whether wired or wifi) is a secondary but would be REALLY nice to have. If that's not possible, then at least one pair of phono inputs would be needed to get something like a Squeezebox for that aspect.

Needn't necessarily have inbuilt speakers.

Have a mate who has one of these and has Iphone 3G seems to work okay with that - however the network side of it terrible in IMO there are no proper instructions and it's a little bit on the slow side on wirless (not sure if better on wired) - I'm comparing it to a Slim Devices (read logitech) Squeeze box which beats it hands down for MP3 etc. but obviously doesn't have the other functionality it does.

I went for a Denon D-M37DAB:

http://www.denon.co.uk/site/frames_main.php?MID=3&...

I bought the optional iPod dock but I'm not actually using it. Instead, I bought an Apple AirPort Express:

http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MB321B/A/AirPort...

and then installed the Remote Control app on the iPhone (also available for iPod Touch).

It works like this:

- you pair up the iPod / iPhone with your iTunes library using the remote control app
- the iPod now controls iTunes on your laptop
- iTunes streams the music to the AirPort express
- you plug the AirPort into the HiFi (using a 3.5mm jack to phono cable)

So you have complete access to your iTunes library, and it plays over WiFi to your stereo. Cool. Only catch is you need a 802.11n speed router otherwise it doesn't have sufficient bandwidth to stream the music.

Ta but no good - I don't want to have to have the PC on smile

(those mp3s that aren't on the ipod are on a NAS, hence the network functionality being handy)

That does look rather nice.

I might be thinking of something sans speakers now though, thanks to my random thoughts about amplifiers in another thread around these parts smile

I bought one of these a while back FG, if you're still interested you could nip round and have a look at it and see if it would suit. However, it was only when I got the ipod touch that I found out they don't charge them up... Doh!

Is there a tv in the room this is going?

if so decent speakers on TV, Apple TV on the back, and use the touch as a remote.

Depends how big a factor the radio side is, but has the advantage that if you don't live alone and go out taking the ipod with you, others still have access to all the Music via apple TV and the apple remote. Plus you can buy music, and use it to rent films.

Sort of. I bought one of those discounted 24" Dell HD Monitors the other day. Being delivered next week smile

I've chagned tack a little now, though - I forgot my 360 has its sound piped through the line-in on my PC and then uses the Logi PC speakers, so the PC has to be on.

So I'm also looking at an amp and speaker set to go in there.

Which then means something like a Squeezebox or Popcorn Hour would sort the music side of things out (and video in the case of the Popcorn), negating the need for a proper full on dock thingy for the iPod.

However, half of the point of the thread was to get something I could use as an alarm clock as well, without leaving everything on (tis all in a single room with my bed).

So I'm now a bit stuck biggrin
