All,

Just wondering if anybody else has DSL and also has the Geodessy update modem connected.

We've been having intermittent DSL sync problems recently and had a very good BT engineer visit this morning. We check the DSLAM & circuit out and all was OK - we managed to trace the issue down to the Geodessy modem!! (yes it was behind a microfilter etc)

Tried ringing Geodessy support but closed for Christmas - so has anybody else had this very odd problem?

There used to be something on their website that noted they don't work at all on DSL equipped households.

Prior to this, I had some very strange, large phone bills whilst trying to get the Geodesy to work. Turns out is was dialling out for ages, but looking like it wasn't connected.

The co. refunded my bill and noted that the modem wouldn't work.

Is there a difference between ADSL and DSL (I don't think so) - I have ADSL and a Geodesy. My Geodesy is the original type, upgraded to a Geodesy Plus - not one of the new types with a screen.
So long as the modem is plugged in on the phone side of the filter it's always been fine. Not very quick but always less than 5 minutes. I don't plug it in very often though, just before I go on a trip to a new place.

Technically there is a difference but most people say it as a generic reference to Broadband.

we actually have RDSL here - which is rate adaptive DSL as opposed to AsyncDSL.

DSL is just the generic term to cover many forms of DSl that are now used depending on circumstances.

yep, DSL is a generic term.

ADSL is asynchronous, which basically means that the upstream and downstream speeds are different. for example, I have a 512kbps ADSL and normally this is delivered as 512kbps to me, and 256kbps from me.

RDSL in most "home" cases is actually RADSL, the rate adaption allows people further from their exchange to have 512kbps to them, at teh expense of a slower upstream speed -- anything down to around 56bps IIRC, but this poses no problems to your average home user as all they do is download

SDSL is a newer product that some are able to get now, but I don't believe BT have it in their exchanges yet, and I don't know about their plans. This is mainly aimed at business customers as it is more pricey, but you get the same speed in each direction, much like a leased line.

Hope this helps......
