I tried one of those deep fried Mars Bars.
I'm not a big chocolate fan, so it tasted a bit sickly, but the OH liked it.

Why? Why would you do this?

Chips and bitterballen are just about the only things on the planet worth deep frying.

If you don't get it in batter you're a poof wink And if you're east of Harthill then you have to get it with chippy sauce, not the rubbish vinegar you get in the west.

To be fair, deep fried pizza has got to be better than the mystery fish in dish cloth that most scottish chippies I've been to serve. Any scots on here know why they won't let you choose what type of fish you have?

Or try a white pudding supper. For people too tight to buy pigs blood! biggrin

Possibly depends on the area, round about us it's usually just Haddock.
(Bear in mind there is an abundance of other things on the menu to choose from, fish is just one more thing to be fried up with us)

I've take a liking to "Chicken Roll" which appears to be a slice of of mechanically recovered "meat", cut from something resembling a draught excluder to roughly the size of a burger, then dipped in batter.

½ a chicken battered & deepfried isn't too bad either

Battered bananas are a good thing too, although unusually they are improved with salt (I think cooking them with everything else gives them a slightly savoury flavour)

East coast, North Sea = Haddock
West Coast, Atlantic = Cod

Considering Cod is normally filled with worms and other parasites so Haddock also tends to be a preference.

But it is good. No other Scottish folks on here had it? Other people must eat it before it's on the menu.

eta. I'll admit to being slightly put off the first time I saw them slicing it from the block, however having had it before I knew it was good.

laugh never heard of it!

Deep fried (battered) haggis is top-notch. They do a spicy haggis in my local which is pretty darn peppery.

Salt & Sauce. Confirmed by a slightly confused but intrigued Scottish colleague.

Lefty, where's your local, I'm quite partial to a Spicy Haggis "Supper"

(In Newmachar you get half a haggis rather than the usual Puddin's)
