Weather Forecasts
Discussion
Just how bad have they got? When I was a lad.....you could tell what the weather was going to be like in the next few days just by switching on the old gogglebox and watching Mr Fish or Ms Willis prattle on for a few minutes. And, by and large, they were right!
No real dramas, apart from the hurricane of '87, but we will let that one go for now.
However.....
Lately, they have become what appears to be pure guesswork and cannot be trusted,at all.
Last week for instance. Checked the weather on Saturday morning, to see what Sunday was going to be like,to plan the day with the Mrs and family. Pretty much clear it said.
On the Saturday afternoon, I caught another forecast on the same TV channel, and they stated that Sunday would now be completely different, pouring down most of the day. Great.
So no outdoor plans were made, and we wrote the day off as it were.
On Sunday itself, it stayed dry all day long, up till around 8pm actually. Bloody great.
I know thats just one day and it concerns just me. But everyday now seems to be a joke weather predicting wise.
Yesterdays forecast for the bank holiday monday here was dry all day. Todays forecast for bank holiday monday here is light rain all day. God alone knows what they will say tomorrow about the bank holiday weather here, typhoon or something i bet!
End of little chewy rant. Thank you for reading.
Anyone else think they are all full of poo?

Correctly predicted that my wedding day 3 weeks ago would be glorious sunshine, following a rotten week before and after.
Never use anything else now!

I find it best just to wait til the day and look out of the window, then do something off-the-cuff if it suits.
Anything longer than a 2 day forecast will be hopelessly wrong. Forecasts, as you say, very from one forecaster to the next. It does give the appearance that they're looking at different data. But then, it's interpretation of data rather than solid results they deal in. Weather is so fickle that it's not a case of adding up a load of numbers and getting the total. You get your total, but were all the numbers right in the first place?
I'm not sure whether they've got worse or we're more aware when they get it wrong as you have responsibilities and plans when you're older. When you were a lad you probably didn't care too much if it was raining a bit when they said it would be sunny.

In my boring life this is an endless topic of discussion as to how they get it so totally wrong all the time. Girl at work went on holiday last week in the North West. I checked on Metcheck. Forecast was lousy. She checked on Orange or something and forecast was good so she chose that forecast. Will see her next week and see which was right if either.

www.metcheck.com seems quite good, though it predicted a rotten week pre & post wedding? Correctly predicted that my wedding day 3 weeks ago would be glorious sunshine, following a rotten week before and after.

Well as I'm in the north-west and its pissed it down every day this week I think you win
I used to like the forecasts that had the isobar maps on them. I'd do my own forecasts from them, and be right a lot more times than the met office are now, at least as far as wether it would rain or not.
On holiday, I always do mine from watching the clouds, a few years back I was riding with a group and was asked if it would rain. I said we might get a bit wet early afternoon, otherwise we should be OK. Actual weather? Sunny start, slowly increasing cloud cover, 15 minutes of rain just after 2pm, then cleared up.
maggit the weather God.
