Are they a recent phenomenon? They seem to be more popular these days in racing.

Think they've been around and used for years - I have a vague recollection that the technology was borrowed from the space suits developed for the Gemini or Apollo missions.

Sure I remember mention of them being used in the early 80's at one of the US GP's (Dallas?).

John Fitzpatrick had one in 1982 at Le Mans...........
