Is this bike any good? I have been going out for a ride in the evenings with a friend for around 10 miles, we do it about 3 times a week and actually quite enjoy it. We both currently have GT mountain bikes however my friend have recently started to ride to work a couple of times a week, it is a 30 miles round trip with one of the steepest hills around our way (Hollingbourne Hill). Therefore he has been looking at a road (racer) bike specifically the Specialized Allez 16 2010, however a shop has suggested that it might not be up to the job. I disagree on the basis his 10 year old mountain bike does it fine anyway.

Is the Specialized a good bike for £500 and what else should he consider at this top price end.

Cheers

I'd be tempted to look at this:
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/pinnacle/senti...
http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/bikes/road/...

Better equipment level, 18sp for a start plus a compact chainset to help out on the big hill.

Cheers,
Rob

Well i am glad to say that Fatwomble and my friend came to an agreement.

Now what are the best pads for a Specialized Allez race/road bike?

Cheers

given you can pick up ultegra inserts (pads) for under a tenner a pair you could do a lot worse than that.
just make sure the rims are kept clean and free from crap and they will be fine. blocks are around £25...
