These are my first ever DSLR shots, I have used a 35mm SLR and digital point and shoot cameras. These were taken with a Canon Eos350D on 'Auto' mode with the standard 18-55mm lens at 55mm. They were taken in low light so they aren't great, the only fiddling that I have done has just been done in iPhoto. What do you think and how can I improve them?

there are many guys here much more experienced than myself, but I'd say firstly the conditions aren't good for photography at all! looks like the rain has fogged up the windows and headlamp covers, and the overcast light doesn't really suit the paint colour (front and sides too dark as not much light is reaching them). Weather is obviously not in your control, but the other big thing is composition - both look a bit 'snapshot' rather than a considered photograph - the car is very tightly framed and those eye-level angles don't help either. Try looking in car mags or advertising to see how either going lower or higher might give you a more dynamic image. Lastly, find a nice backdrop, and show some of it, that will make your images look more like photography and less like random snaps. One last thing, the smudgy reg plates are a bit distracting, get some practise in on photoshop! Hope that helps!smile

Agree with above nice shots, but maybe try a few 'interesting or different angles' to make your photos stand out, a few i've tried from 'different' angles, some work and some dont wink. Dont be scared trying something different. And experiment with different effects.

Overall I think they are good shots smile
Hope this helps.

Looking at some of the threads on here perhaps there's a market for car photography courses for some of the talented togs on the forum ??

First one is a bit snapshotty but i really like the shadows on the front of the second, in the lights and grille. A lower angle would help it a bit, as would some foreign weather.
I think the rain on the windscreen is quite a nice effect too.

As above, practice using different angles and use the available light, be creative.
Also shoot in RAW to give you more flexibility on your PC.
