Luca Badoer believes that he can score points at Monza next month if he retains his seat despite being classified last in the Belgian Grand Prix.

The Italian, who returned to F1 racing after almost a decade as a test driver at last week's European Grand Prix, is tipped to be replaced for the Italian Grand Prix.

But Badoer believes that the experience he has built up over the past two weekends means he is now ready to fight for a top eight finish.

"In Monza, I will start with the aim to get in the points," said Badoer. "I am sure that I can get a good result there. It's one of the tracks that we do a lot of testing at. At Mugello, Fiorano and Monza I could close my eyes!

"Monza is my home track. I have a lot of experience and I think that the Ferrari will still be my car there.

"This weekend generally was positive and I have much more experience than in Valencia. Now I feel like I have always been racing in F1.

"With this race now, I'm ready. I feel comfortable, I have a good feeling for the car and I think Monza will be a good result.

The 38-year-old believes that a strong result in Monza is the best way to deal with the pressure put on him by the media for his performances in the last two races.

"The pressure will go away with a good result," said Badoer. "We are just waiting for a good result. Kimi won the race, so it's very good for Ferrari, for the spirit and for all the people that are working here and at home.

"We knew straight away after Felipe's accident that it was not an easy situation. But today we won the race and in Monza we both have a chance to have a good race."

Is this guy delluded? His performances in a quick Ferrari have been a joke and laughable to say the least. I will be very suprised if he starts at Monza

I think he could do it.

At Spa he was quickest in S1 and his S3 time was very competitive. It was only S2 that let him down. And it did let him down, he was between 2 - 4 seconds slower in that sector than anyone else.

As someone else pointed out yesterday, they didn't think he had the confidence throught the faster corners.

On his home track, I think he can do it.

S1 at Spa is literally, plant your foot and hold on, there is zero skill involved in a modern F1 car in that sector, except when on cold tyres on the first lap where if the car isn't 100% you may have to correct the steering a bit. S2 is where the performance is and where driver input makes a difference, he was woeful in that and nearly caused a crash in Poulon he was so slow through there. He's had his chance, he isn't going to do what a rookie could manage, so it's literally pointless having him drive again.

Delluded & Blinkered springs to mind - he had no excuses at Spa with such a quick Car and as a racing driver - i assume he has raced at Spa a countless number of times. The guy is a Joke.

Your probably right.

However I do find his antics entertaining. Anyone remember another Driver crashing in Parc Ferme? laugh

It was, just like the Force India was, whats your point exactly? The Ferrari has always been a car capable of finishing in the top 10 week in week out. This idiot called Badoer has finished last in a quick Ferrari - Its by no means up there with the Brawns & Redbulls but its not a Torro Rossa and thats were Badoer is placing it.

Could happen.

Of course, even though the circuit suits a lack of talent and a lot of power such as the Badoer/Ferrari/Kers package, the only really likely way is that 12 cars could drop out with engine failure. wink

Liuzzi?
Karthikeyan?
Di Resta?

All three have been linked or are involved with Force India.

Maybe they are doing a swap with Ferrari and will get Badoer.

The loneliness of Luca Badoer
Ed Gorman

I got a lift in one of the photographer shuttle buses up to Les Combes for qualifying. It was a beautiful afternoon at Spa with a cool breeze and broken clouds, one or two of them on the grey side. The track looked immaculate, the in-field neatly mown, the red and white curbs and tyre walls gleaming. Opposite, in the trees, were the fans on their portable chairs with their flags and team shirts - real motorsport enthusiasts you sense at a track where racing has a proper history and pedigree. (Thus, we are about as far away from China, Bahrain, Malaysia and no doubt Abu Dhabi once the novelty wears off, as it is possible to be).

Up there in the woods where the old track used to dive off down to the Masta Kink and all that, the paddock seems a long way away below you and there are no television screens to fill you in either. So its noise-abating headphones on and enjoy the spectacle. I stood on the outside of the left-hander right next to the armco so I could see the cars appear at the top of the long climb from Eau Rouge, then flick right, point straight at me, then go left, then straight for a second or two and then take the sharp right-hander as they began the long descent through Rivage, Pouhon and Fagnes.

It's all so quick. Even after three years of watching this it comes as a shock to the visual senses when you see what these guys are doing for a living. The eye plays tricks as always. When the cars are coming at you the image looks steady enough but I noticed that, as they moved away from me, there was a sensation, almost, of the eye pixilating the image so the cars seemed to jump from one seperate box or frame to the next. Maybe I need to see an eye specialist; more likely this is how the human lense digests movement at this pace.

Early impressions: Rubens looked super-smooth as did Kimi. Luca Badoer never got the rhythm of the sequence right - you could see it and you could hear it. The trick was to get all the three corners in phase and Luca was never able to do that and his engine note was at the wrong pitch as he exited the middle corner (left-hander), giving him away every time. Lewis seems to sit higher in his car than all the other drivers. Again this could have been a trick of the eye, as you pick up his bright yellow helmet. He never looked confident and I guess that was born out in his ranking (12th). Heikki, who finished one place lower, was always in danger of losing the back end. Robert's jagged style reminded me of Felipe. The two Toyotas looked a real handful all afternoon with both Jarno (2nd) and Timo (7th) having to put in rapid steering corrections on the way to the second right-hander. I was surprised to discover they were competitive because it looked like hard and slow work for them.

As the session progressed and the sweet smell of the world's most expensive engineering drifted across the track, I was thinking about moving on down to Rivage when, right in front of me, Luca lost it and came careering across the tarmac before smashing into the tyre wall about 30ft from where I was standing. It was hard to see what happened and I haven't seen a replay, but he seemed to lose his thread, with another car alongside, and went through the in-field before spinning and hitting the wall back-end first. The impact wrecked the rear wing, broke several rear suspension arms and generally made a mess of his beautiful car which sat smouldering with gravel on the floor.

The image I will never forget is of Luca, having got out and climbed over the wall with his helmet and balaclava off, leaning on the barrier trying to collect himself. He had just had a big shock and the adrenalin was still coursing through his veins and he knew everyone was watching him on television - photographers were appearing from nowhere and members of the crowd were gathering to take pictures too. Here was the Ferrari test driver who everybody thinks isn't good enough, having just trashed his car in qualifying - he must have been so angry and embarrassed but he could say nothing. He stood for a few seconds, the loneliest man in Formula One (it is a sad truth, but he will probably end up regretting he ever answered Ferrari's call to fill in for Felipe and Michael) and then moved off. In front of him a photographer walked backwards, his lense pointing straight into his face. After what must have seemed to the Italian like an eternity, (in fact it was probably only just a few minutes), a motorbike arrived to take him back to the pits. Leaving the scene, helmet back on, Hands device hanging off him he disappeared into the woods.

I had a good look at his car which the marshalls dumped on the rough surface off the side of the access road until the end of the session. The green "high-voltage" warning light was on and we were not allowed to touch - I guess that is the KERS system. So perfect at almost all times when we see them, a broken Formula One car, especially a Ferrari, is not a pretty sight. The mechanics will be working hard tonight. Luca's car had no number on it. I counted 28 buttons or switches on the steering wheel. Several of the broken shards of carbon and bits of broken metal were piled on the seat, ready for delivery back to the garage. The rear tyres were coloured differently. The right was brown (dirt), the left was white (paint from the tyre wall).

What turned out to be one of the most extraordinary qualifying sessions continued. Without the TV or trackside commentary which I could not hear, you could not tell who was on top at any stage. What you notice in Q3 is how quiet the place is during the long gaps between each of the 10 cars passing. They seem to take ages to get back to where you are but, then again, at 7km this is the longest track on the calendar. When I finally took the headphones off having seen no-one go past waving to the crowd and no sign of cheering from them for one driver, I was stunned to hear the French commentator announcing that Fisi had made it to pole. Had the world gone mad while I was up at Les Combes?

The session proved very fruitful for Rubens whose championship charge is continuing and a disaster for Jenson. The grid slots from 12-15 are fascinating: Lewis, then Fernando, then Jenson, then Heikki...

Liuzzi is the Force India reserve driver and the one they will put in the car for Monza.

Indeed, and it finished 13 places ahead of Badoer, your point is?

Badoer was 9kph faster than anyone else in S1 because that was on the qualifying lap when he slipstreamed Vettel and then braked too late (so went through the speed trap faster) and crashed at Les Combes. He did it at the end of Q1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvm5XK-RDkc

As soon as Massa has been for his medical examination later today, Ferrari will be anouncing their plans for the rest of the season . . . . . . . . so we should hear later today if Fisi is going to Maranello for the rest of the season and boy will it be interesting to see what he can do in comparison to Kimi

I was referring to him being the quickest in S1 in the race.

and the point I was trying to make, was that if he was fastest because he had KERS, why was he faster than Kimi?!?!

looking at the sector times, I would suggest he was running less wing than just about everybody else.
