Robbed by chip and pin!

Just checked my bank online and it seems I've inexplicably paid for someone elses petrol at Sainsbury's last week. I went and paid for £10 worth of fuel and a ribena on my card. Definitely gave the right pump number and should have cost £10.59 or there abouts. Been charged £40.43!! Now granted I should have checked the amount before entering my pin etc but surely there must be something I can do about this. Was gonna pop into the bank tomorrow to see what can be done. Are they just going to laugh and tell me where to go?

i think you would need to speak to sainsbury's, presumably the cashier has made a mistake and put in the wrong pump number.

Yeah, I thought that I'd maybe have to put this one down to experience. And then I thought, balls to that, they'd be on to me quicker than I could say 'petrol burner' if I'd drove off without paying and would be able to link numberplate to transaction so should work the other way round when they've got £30 of mine!

Do you really expect the petrol station to troll through the CCTV footage to see if your story was true? I'd do it if it was my garage, but charge you £40 for my time

I don't expect them too no, it just seems a tad unjust, although it's kinda my own fault not checking the amount the fkwit behind the counter has cost me £30 that I haven't got to throw away!

try it in sainsburys, they *may* allow a refund as a good will gesture, depends entirely on the manager you speak to, they can give refunds with no reciept etc as good will gestures at their own discretion.

CCTV tapes are kept for 7 days. But wont be of any use as they only show the forcourt and till area, no link to the EPOS or pump systems.
Stick your head into saino's and talk to the sation manager if posible, if they are in a good mood they will tell you to always check the amount and give you the difference in vouchers.
The station attendents dont give you the ammout and fuel type in these places for nothing! The place I worked in my student days would have one person a week at least paying for the wrong pump!

I wonder what percentage of people always check the amount before entering their pin number? Despite your critics on this thread, I'd wager a good number of people just pump in that pin and don't check the amount.

the machine we use at the pub gets you to press enter first then your pin then enter again. this means we actually have to say "please confirm the amount with the green button first then enter your pin"
its a good idea seeing as the machine isnt linked to the till so we have to enter the amount ourselves.

the amount of idiots who DONT fkING LISTEN a punch their pin in straight away (which doesn't work) is unreal. even though it says on the screen

"£xx.xx confirm amount ENT = confirm CNL = decline"

Best bet. The more you dig your feet in, the more you will cause them stress and take up their time. Sadly, the genuine people are often too nice to persist, where as the more 'lying basterd' clientèle will know all the tricks to get what they want.

Do you care enough to carry this though? If you do, go there and speak to whatever duty manager is there. Should you fail and the store is a large chain, write to their head office and make a complaint - Has to be worth some free fuel vouchers as a good will gesture, more likely than a refund.

Would be interesting to know if the other person paid your bill and kept quiet, or whether the staff realised there was a mistake. They might remember it, if this is the case.

If the other customer got offered and paid your bill, saving themselves £30, you've got less chance of a refund I'd have thought.

so the OP went to the pay station and got mixed up on the pump number and did not check the amount on the bill and the pump was about right and hopes to get a refund ?

Simple solution to this!
Go back & put £40 worth of petrol in your car, wait until somebody only puts in £10 then say there pump number! Theres your £30 back.

I'm guessing your went in and said something like 'petrol on the blue car out there' and the cashier put the wrong pump on, ie, your fault. I work at a forecourt and NEVER before have I heard someone say pump 8, and me press pump 3.

However, I've had a lot of people come in and pay for the wrong petrol, being the co-op, all the dumb-arses give me their share number, so are easily traced and charged the correct amount.

BTW, I wouldn't refund your money, how can you prove to me you didn't put £40 in?

As it happens I said, pump 12 please. I distinctly remember this as we'd gone to the same pump a week previous when I'd paid for some petrol. I do appreciate that it's my fault though. Gonna pop in tomorrow and see what they say to my pleas.
