I was at Spa at the end of June with Goldtrack in the R8 with standard road tyres, and was wondering whether it was possible to do Eau Rouge flat out. I built my speed up throughout the day but I never felt i got close to be honest despite doing pretty respectable lap times around 2:57

For those that have done Spa is it flat out in any road car?

I did it flat in a 2.3 diesel Sierra Estate when it still a public road, or at least as flat as that old heap would go, which wasn't very quick at all loaded up to the gunwhales.

I would quite confidently say no Steve. Far from it. Have fun trying though.

What speed are we talking about though ? I think you could get a lot of it through the downhill straight before...

I was hitting the compression at between 125-130mph before lifting to take Radillion at c.95mph

I would suspect not unless its a comparatively slow car, even the Porsche cup cars etc are lifting off through the bottom of Eau Rouge.

Its one of the attractions remaining in F1 that these cars can go through there at that speed without a hint of lift off, a sight to behold!

Anyway, back on topic, I think you'd be looking at some serious machinery to be going through there flat.

Enjoy trying

You've lost me I never said I was flat, that's the point of the thread. Suggest you re-read my original post.

Watching your car swept out of the barriers with a dustpan and brush isn't the best time to start musing on the wonders of F1 downforce.

Setting targets like this just leads to trouble, F1 cars are designed and specifically set up for the job, road cars are designed to do a number of tasks well, taking eau rouge flat would be well down the list.

Enjoy your car, take it to its limits and yours, but don't write off your car or yourself trying to be Lewis Hamilton.

Guys, guys, guys!

It was an open question and I was curious whether it was possible in a road car. From the responses here clearly not.

I could go flat by the end of the day in my old Clio 182 Trophy on R888's but I did prefer a tiny comfort lift. I THINK it was around 110mph I took it. All I remember was entry was faster than exit as even being flat in 4th gear the car would actually lose speed going uphill through the corner frown

Most cars you see on track are faster in a straight line than a clio but not si much round the bends so I imagine more cars than not would need to lift.

I'd imagine a lot of low-ish powered cars could take it flat.

Eau Rouge has been terribly emasculated.

Pouhon is Spa's real big balls corner.

Agreed - Radillon can be straightlined up the hill although not advisable in the wet.

Pouhon is the real challenge although even that is less daunting since they removed the gravel traps a couple of years ago for Bernie's boys.

matt, your right, was circa 110 on the clock when we were at Spa last summer.

All cars will take a hit in speed loss - even ont he f1 commentary, they said that it might sound like a lift, but its the incline reducing engine pace as such.

Agree though, that targets like this are gonna end it tears, esp when you start taking more powerful road cars out there

hmmm, I was standing watching the Carrera's penduluming through there at the weekend. That must have taken gonads the size of my head. Most cars were having 2 moments, on for each direction change that would have had me changing my trousers.

Also saw a GP2 car make a big mess of itself and the tire wall after getting it wrong. He was lifted into an ambulance (was thankfully shocked but OK).
