I suppose this has been asked before but I have never been given a specific answer.

We all know that the 340bhp is fanciful on the 500 in standard mode but how about the 0-60mph performance of 4.1 seconds and the top speed of 167mph.

Has anyone proved these figures?

Cheers

Steve

I don't know about the 0-60 time but about 12 years ago on my griff 500 just runned in I reached 257kmh reading on a motorway, something around 160 mph I guess, I think the car had some more to give but I got freightened by the front end starting to fly up....

The 0-60 time of 4.3s is well documented for my Ferrari 550 Maranello. My Griff definitely feels quicker although it is not a standard 500 but bored out to 5.3.

I have not tried the Griff's top speed, not really its forte IMHO.

Come along to York Raceway next meeting 20th Sept.
There will be a 0-60 camera set up in the right lane.
I recorded a 3.95 in May and will be hoping for a 3.7 this time round

the figure were probably very accurate (the performance ones)

ie they just used Autocar's figures produced in Autocars roadtests...

given that the magazines all tried their utmost to get the best performance out of all cars, it was/is a pretty reliable measure..

whether or not the griifith supplied to autocar was totally standard or not is up for debate! wink

My griff, has 276 bhp, weighs a bit over a tonne, and definetly feels 5seconds or under, 100 in 11 or under. cf many other perofrmance cars i've tried.

The Autocar test quoted 0-60 in 4.2 and 0-100 in 10.2.

I don't know but I suspect that this was probably quite a "strong" engine...

They complained bitterly about it bunny hopping everywhere which would support the fact that it was tweaked.

A couple of further items back this up:-

1) When Tiff Needell performance tested a Chim 500 for Top Gear it did 0-60 in more like five seconds. Unfortunately I can't find my copy of this but I remember being pretty dissapointed by them

2) My Chim (which had a Rolling roaded 315hp) was pretty much bang on par with a DMS Mapped Z4M at V-Max a couple of years back. A standard Z4M does 0-100 in 12 dead. Somehow the sums don't add up if that roadtest Griff was standard

They vary massively. Mines the only one I know of that hits 60 in just over 3 seconds.

Id like to know the spec on your car. Just over 3 is massively quick.

Tapped in a 'random' bhp number in letstorquebhp.com's 'performance calculator'

Power at Flywheel (BHP) : 300
Weight without Driver (KG) : 1060
Power to Weight Ratio (BHP Per Ton) : 287.56
0 - 60 (Secs) : 4.20
0 - 100 (Secs) : 10.01
60 - 100 (Secs) : 5.81
Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.50
Terminal Speed (MPH) : 111.73
Drag Strip Quarter Mile (Secs) : 12.40
Drag Strip Terminal Speed (MPH) : 113.03

I'd say - bingo. biggrin

0 - 60 (Secs) : 3.53
0 - 100 (Secs) : 7.92

The figures coming out of those calculators always seem a little punchy to me. Particularly the higher speed elements. It is almost like drag is not properly accounted for...

I can tell you as far as the times and speeds are concerned it is very accurate. Ive ran 11.63 @ 125 mph which suggests upto 440 bhp to match the terminal speed which is the best indicator of power. What it doesnt allow for in my case is the massive jump in my torque curve whilst using nitrous. So i dont believe i hit a peak power of 440 bhp but it wont be far from 400.

The calculator is better as a comparison tool IMO but still very useful.

My GPz 900 could only manage similar times back in the 80's and they were considered a very fast bike at the timeyes

Hard to believe the performance eek, but based on that video the speed was still going up quite sharply during the gear change so I suspect you had a bit of speedo lag in there too - if the speedo and timing are accurate, you might have hit a true 60 even faster than that video suggests.

The speedo was actually about 5% under due to having 255/50/16's on the rear which are nearly 2" taller than standard. The 0-60mph time was recorded by a special speed camera that York have at some meetings that is integrated with their other 1/4 mile timing equipment. Its very accurate but you do get a little head start of about 12" i think from the staging light to the start timing light.

Back-of-a-fag-packet estimate suggests the roll-out would be worth a couple of tenths of a second.

If you want to run a PB at then you just and so light up the staging light to give you the maximum rolling start advantage.
If you want to cut your reaction time then roll further forward. You can even 'deep stage' by rolling forward enough to unlight the 1st stage light but then your dangerously close to the start beam and risking a red light.

I can live with .2 and claiming a 3.8 to 60 is good enough for me. Till next year wink
