Well I finally did it.

Broke the Clio
Just had the ticking noise I've experienced since returning from Scotland diagnosed as a knackered bearing in the gearbox caused by the oil leaking from the 'box. £600 just for a re-conditioned 'box! Ouch. My wallet is wilting by the minute.
f
ker is its either happened since I had the car serviced back in July (approx 2500 miles ago) or it was missed. I did'nt have an advisory at the time or anything. This is at the specialist indy I've taken the car to be serviced for the past 3yrs based upon their reputation and pricing. The mechanic at the local garage I've taken the car today says it looks like it has been leaking for quite some time.
Not happy. The Clio seems to be coming over all French recently.

Is it worth taking a punt on just swapping it for a secondhand box from a scrappy? or are they generally known to be a weakspot so getting a reconditioned one a better idea?
If you're seriously considering trading the car anyway then now would be a better time as it obviously won't cost them as much to fix it, you'll lose less than you would getting it fixed then selling the car on.
For all it's troubles my 205 does have the benefit that parts are a bit cheaper... broken gearbox.. get another for £50 then keep going!! (Not much help I know

)Sounds like the same cause too. To cut a long story short, I went to 3D in Reading and they quoted something like £700 for recon' inc VAT. Then I thought I'd take a risk and bought a used 'box from a Renault breakers in Oldham I think - had it fitted and it wouldn't engage 2 gears, never got my money back (''it worked when we sent it'' and all that), another punt, got a low mileage gearbox on eBay for £150 and had that fitted and luckily it really seems to be a hardly used box and all is well. Total cost about £850, if I had got a decent 'box the first time, about £450. I was impressed by 3D and would probably have gone to them all along unless I could have guaranteed getting a low mileage/fit gearbox from somewhere.
Just remembered, I know where there's a low mileage gearbox in a rolled 182 in a scrapyard in Devon, let me know if you want the details. I'm having some bits sent up from this vehicle so they could put everything on one pallet for £50..

But you'd have a complete mug (and deaf) to buy it as it stands now.
