Did you know that Artex and similar products used to be made with Asbestos as an ingrediant? Apparantly an ingrediant from before the mid 1980's.

I didnt. frown

Just been stripping Artex from a house last renovated in the early 1980's.

Worth knowing before hand.

You will be fine for now. It'll take 30 years before you die.

my mates dad died of asbestosis........
took nearly a week to cremate him! smile

on a serious note if asbestos was as dangerous as they make out everybody born before 1980 would be dead.
the fibres have to be a specific size and airborne to be a danger.
i have machined it on lathe's and milling machines with dust extraction before and im still here.

Usually it is white asbestos in artex ceilings, probably not an issue but I personally wouldn't use a sander type of device on it. Just have them skimmed over.

Don't some forget 'vinyl' floor tiles have it in too... as in the type that were laid on concrete and before carpet, etc.

Virtually all asbestos in artex will be 'harmless' stuff. It certainly won't be the nasty blue stuff.

That said, when we had our downstairs hall ceiling ripped out and replaced after a water leak they took no chances, sealed off the whole area inside the house, worked in suits and masks and hosed it all down out in the front garden under special tents. My house looked like a crime scene that day!

I always used to scrape off the high points before skimming over artex. I reckon I'll be fine though as the filters in my cigarettes will have stopped any asbestos getting into my lungs.

Now I just overboard or skim straight over.

Trouble is you just don't know where it is, cladding, lagging, artex etc etc. It's blinkin everywhere...

If you've going to be doing any job in the house that needs a dust mask, get a P3 rated respirator. Might cost a bit more, but might just be worth the pennies. Granted it won't fulfil all the safe practice criteria, but better than nothing.

Sorry guys, there is no such thing as 'harmless' asbestos, it's all dangerous.
There is a right way to remove it, even when it's in artex. All I can suggest is if you have any doubts, do your research first on how to remove the object or material it's in.

Please don't mess around with the stuff whether you think it's harmless or not. It takes years to affect you and will kill you slowly. My dad used to work with the stuff and contracted asbestosis. He died which to be honest was a blessing as he suffered dramatically for years because of it. We had to have stair lifts and oxygen pipes fitted round the house just so he could get about. It still makes me cry remembering the shadow of a man that he once was and that he never got to see any of his grandchildren. He was the last to die from all those who worked for the same firm. He was only 54 when he died.

We plaster boarded over the top of ours I htink - the plasterers dealt with it all.

I have to say the attitudes to asbestos vary widly - from run to the hills - 5k to remove one asbestos tile from roof - to the - we don't really care attitude. We had tiles and some corrugated sheets - we had various builders look at the job (one who built the stuff 40 years ago) and they just didn't care.
I got some advice from an official body somewhere - I took photos and asked them what they thought and they were able to give best and worst case scenarios and what would and wouldn't be legal in those cases

So much for the blue and white theory then...

I suspect like most things it's question of exposure. A single bucket can contain suffient Wonder And Total Extinguishing Resource (W.A.T.E.R.) to kill 12 people; it's how you use it that counts.

I've just had my guttering and all that replaced at home whilst I was away.

The company that did it left one of the downpipes on my back lawn... no problem thought I..... smash it up, throw it in the Jeep and off to the tip.

Got to the tip, the eco-mentalist chappie spotted it and you'd have thought I'd pissed on his kids.
I got a snotty letter handed to me, telling me that Asbestos can only be disposed of at 3 sites in Wiltshire (all miles from me) and that I must arrived with all material double-bagged and I must have overalls, goggles, gloves and god knows what else.

I said to him, I'm hardly trying to dispose of nuclear waste, so how's about I just bury it in the foundations of my new fence and we leave it at that.

He didn't say much as I threw it all back in the Jeep and drove off.

Honestly, 40 years ago we were living in houses built of the stuff, I hardly think a few minutes exposure's going to kill you!
