Is it just me or is it hard to 'feel' the acceleration in an R32. Sat in one recently and I didn't have any sense of speed or any rush. Don't think he was pushing it that much but still we were going pretty quick. I feel the acceleration in a GTI a lot more. I understand its naturally aspirated but do R32 owners get that acceleration feeling? People like CupraBob?

Its 4WD acceleration - you dont feel the thrust the same as 2WD.

No they dont feel that fast, in fairness, the power to weight ratio of the car isn't too great as it is very heavy for a hatchback. They certainly don't hang about but the engine does have a very smooth power delivery which probably hides the feeling of acceleration aswell. Lovely car to drive though, and that sound, i'm sure you will agree, is just heavenly!

Chuck a turbo on her, that should do the trick!! wink

Yep had one of these and your right they dont feel that fast but do shift along...my previously owned lightly fettled VR6 `felt` quicker. As regards the shove in the back real feeling of acceleration and four wheel drive you need a run out in my Audi RS2 for that wink

i think you do, a friends evo9 fq360 felt absolutely savage, just maybe not enough power in an r32 or perhaps vag products manage to leave it out.

Well i've driven a 997 Turbo and foot down you monster to over a ton very very quickly but never seem to get a surge or thrust of power, unlike in my GT3 which has 415bhp as standard going through the rear wheels and is non-turbo.

I've driven an A5 3.0tdi quattro and there was some definite 'thrust' there. Put me back in the seat, but then again it is a torquey diesel engine.

The R32 doesn't feel fast when accelerating. The delivery is so smooth and especially in DSG form there is no gaps in acceleration therefore there is no sensation of acceleration, just constant drive and because traction is so good you don't get any fuss.

A GTI is more fun to drive and more nimble but the R32 does everything so well ( apart from passing a Shell garage) it takes a bit of the fun away.

Each to their own but I love the R32 but for me it's ideal, a high speed cruiser

I get what you mean, each to their own. An S3 would probably provide that acceleration feel but the noise is nothing compared to the R32. Was behind an S3 today and it sounded very 'loud corsa' kinda thing, hopefuly it was just a one off.

Are you just wanting that shove-in-the-back feeling of a turbo spooling up?

The 3.2 V6 delivers its poke from low revs upwards throughout the whole rev counter. Look up the 50 - 70mph times & compare them to a GTI - you won't be disappointed.

I do miss the bottom end grunt of my R32 but the sudden unleashing of all 460bhp from my tweaked 2.7 biturbo as the turbos kick in is amazing, except when coming out of a corner in too high a gear when the lag feels endless...

I'm not in a position to buy one yet, I was just disappointed as it's always been my favourite car and the feel of acceleration was not there. Still amazing none the less.

I find mine can still shock me a little... 3.5k in 2nd gear can give you some poke back in your chair, but then other times it can feel lethargic..

How many miles was on the 32? I know many people say the car really opens up after 20k Miles!!! Mine feels much better at 18k than it did at 10k...

Mine also seems to run better after its had a few days of hard driving.. Its like the car slips into a lazy mode if youve been pottering around for too long...

And + 1 with what everone else has said, its got such a smooth delivery it really masks speed, but over 80 it feels its strongest imo.. Through the lanes aswell it really is amazing at how fast it can cover ground.

I worried about my 32 for a while, then test drove a 350z and realised its just lower powered NA engines, especially if your used to a turbo.. smile hope that made sense...

I remember test driving my Mk5 R32 and i vividly remember thinking "come on wheres the kick" when pressing on. I was at the time trading in my Mk5 GTI and i remember thinking the GTI was quicker.Of course there really wasnt much in it but the R32 power delievery is so linear...doesnt feel quick until you watch the speedo!!!!!

I had two MK5 R32 S and loved them so much i miss them somedays..BUT my RS4 makes up for the loss!! lol..

Wifeys ED30 has a mountain shove in the back and then justs pull all the way round.

I still wonder if it has been mapped as it has made some bigger/fancier machinery look rather silly on occasions.

R32......my brother is wanting one and it will be interesting to see how the two cars fare together.

If by cross country you mean maintaining a constant 70 on the motorway then yes, as for technical swisty A and B roads - was very dissapointed. My Mk5 turned like a ferry, it was utterly shocking. I think I preferred the Mk4.

Hi,

I bought an R32 8 months ago after 4 years in a Boxster S. I thought the R32 was rubbish compared to the Boxster but needs must and all that.

After getting used to the power delivery you realise what a great, capable car the Mk5 R32 is. I can now drive equally as quick on familiar roads/journeys as I did in the Porsche.

I have a MK5 Gti in the family and although it is more chuckable the R32 gets my vote but it is an aquired taste.

the MK4 R32 is a bit more Raw - the MK 5 is very smooth.

I will be buying one to run alongside the RS4 shorly smile

You have to love the heavy tax and recession - they have just fallen in price!
