I hate people who air their problems on here....but...
Discussion
...now i'm gonna do it!
Totally fed up with the wreck that my life has become...
Am currently 28, living with my mother, with no job (and seemingly no way of even getting an interview) and just feel the need to let it all out.
Here's the jist....
- serious illness at 15 so no gcse
- lost father when 16
- rubbish jobs till 25
- lucked into temp job in industry i love (motorsport)
- went to do foundation degree in above subject
- did very well (despite ending up in hospital near end of course)
- had job arranged prior to finishing (m'sport electronics)
- gained immediate respect for abilites in job, got own place
- credit crunch hit company - mass redundancies inc me
- moved back to mothers so as not to run up huge debt
...and not the bit thats mega buggin me...
no mater how hard i try i cannot get ANY interviews let alone job offers. I've contacted hundreds of companies (both motorsport, and others), had my old boss speak to all his contacts.
I just dont kno what to do....i suspect non motorsport companies see my cv and think i'm too motorsport biased and will jump ship if the opportunity arose....but i can't delete all the motorsport stuff as it would then be blank....and there just never appears to be any jobs at lower levels within motorsport. On top of this, i despise living here, i have zero in common with the rest of my family, and this leads me to shut myself in (a very small) room. Oh, and now my savings have litteraly run out.
I just don't know what to do to fix all this!

You're still young.
Get a bar job to keep the pennies coming in, meet some girls at said bar, keep applying for jobs in motorsport.
Stay focussed.
+1 stay focused and plug away and eventually things will always happen. Try to do some more courses etc whilst looking so you have a reason to be out doing something constructive and meeting new people. Get a bar job to keep the pennies coming in, meet some girls at said bar, keep applying for jobs in motorsport.
Stay focussed.
If you get job seekers or a bar job etc may be able to afford a room to rent somewhere with like minded people.

My previous drop was assembly of wiring looms (only other industry that uses similar stuff is aerospace), although I have experience of mechanics and data analysis of formula ford and a little bit of club f3.

A travelling jobs is not really ideal in the (health) circumstances.
All i wanna do is make stuff that goes on top end racing cars really....i don't actually mind what it is!!!
Once in a job i enjoy i'm the most commited and determined person ever.
I know i gotta stay positive and have done quite well, but its really wearing me down now....i think its my living environment thats does it more than the lack of job, tho obviously they are connected.
A bar job isnt suitable either....not that i even see any of them advertised at mo.
Another echo from here... Stay positive. It's arse for now, but it will swing. My wife lost her job and looked for 5 months with nothing. She's very intelligent and has a great education, but still couldn't help but get disheartened, as not so much of a sniff of luck came her way.
Time, place and luck meant she's now been employed for 3 weeks now, luckily doing what she loves. It was tough for her to remain positive all the time, but that was definately the key.
Frankly, she would have been excited being employed as a cleaner, we know how tough it is.
Bear in mind, that the respect you gained, and experience, they are all stuck on you, nobody can take that stuff away from you, and none of this is your fault. You'll be rocking and rolling when the tide turns, hopefully sooner rather than later..

Join the club mate.
Last August I was on top of the world, loads of Job offers and took a dream job at Jaguar Land Rover, loved what I did, enjoyed going to work, had my own place had it all planned out.
The Gordons cronies f
ked the economy, job gone and I can't get an interview for love nor money, living back with the 'rents. A year ago my I was recieving a phone call everyday offering an interview.... now, I have had 1 interview in the last 6 months.
It is pathetic, I feel horrible, money is all gone and nothing is improvng.
Even pounding the internet and phone for jobs everyday for 6 months has turned up nothing.
I have a similar problem in that I have a Motorsport Engineering degree but work in Automotive. Also there are so many engineers out of work that recruiters and employers can take their pick of the engineers with the exact skills and qualifications they want.
Sorry to air my greivences in your thread mate but you know, chin up and all that.
I find that really working hard on my own projects and finding jobs advertised keeps me sane and motivated.

Tried looking at the automotive sector, more specifically Companies like Ricardo, who specialise in data acquisition for prototype vehicles etc, This is what I did when I left college, before I went to uni (was offered an apprenticeship in Auto Electronics (sounds a lot like creating wiring looms, Millspec connectors, wire spec etc?) I decided to go to uni and do Foundation Degree in motorsport which I've just finished, and going on to do Mech Eng hons degree this year
Just a thought, sounds like you're suited to the job.

Has crossed my mind to go back to education, but i'm 28....i just want a career!
Have you thought of becoming self employed?
There will be lots of race cars being build over the winter and most will need a loom. I am sure a small advert on Motorsport Ads, Race Cars Direct etc would pick you up some work. Most teams wont have anyone in house to do this sort of thing, they will simply have a mechanic who can get the job done (to a fashion) or call in external people (such as yourself). Who knows once you get your foot in the door it could lead to other things.
It could also be quite lucrative selling your services to privateers. Many people wont realise the advantages of getting a loom made for their race/kit car. Why not get some leaflets done explaining the advantages and hand them out at a few race meetings.
You will need to travel but most people will have somewhere to work on their car and if you explain your situation may be happy for you to work at their place, obviously this will need to be factored into the price.

The outlay for tooling and materials would be too high to do that unfortunately.
And just to add to my woes, i just sabotaged myself from within....found a job advertised i could do well for a big name in motorsport, but a combination of google misleading me and me not reading the job spec properly means i worded my email as though it was electronics when it was another department (i could still do it well even for this dept).....so thats prob blown another one

Step back and look at what has wiring and sometimes needs a spanner or a quick whack with a hammer and apply for it. Don't stick to one specific trade group as there will be hundreds of other industries that you can work in with what you already have.

I reckon this bloke is on the money, you might not score a major contract with anyone but there are always club level racers and kit car builders scratching their heads and staring at a tangle of wires on the garage floor. Although the initial outlay would be money you dont have coming in it can't be to excessive...not like you will need a van full of shiny snap on gear!
Heck even if you dont do this with an aim to starting a business it still keeps your hand in, gives you a bit of income (likely to be cash to) and it gets you out there meeting people who might be be able to put you in touch with some other people.
