Hi All,

I hope you are well!

I have sadly not been using my wedge very much at the moment and she is i think feeling a little neglected! She's tucked up all clean in the garage with her dry cover on so is happy but lonely!

Anyhow-ive been having a problem which is getting worse. It as been from start up in the past, although is becoming more of an 'everytime' issue. The problem i have is that she seems to misfire at random.

Before everyone says 'leads, dizzy, plugs' etc i wanted to say a couple more things.

Firstly, it now happens when at low RPM i plant my foot to the floor whereas if i slowly put my foot to the floor it doesnt...strange!

If it misfires from start, by turning off and on a few time, it clears the problem...

Spoke to RPI as i want to get some more power out, and they have guessed that my problem is down to weak ignition and possible lack of fuel pressure.

Has anyone uprated their ignition system and also a rising rate fuel pressure system?

Also, can anyone reccomend new cams which i think i will be changing at the same time...?

Cheers, Matt-Man

Had a similar misfire on mine (although switching on/off repeatedly didn't help).
Put on new fuel lines and filter - made a huge difference (the old pipes were a bit 'worn' where they had been nudging the prop shaft!) Fuel consumption went from 6 to 9 mpg too!! biggrin

Got a similar problem with mine at the moment too, it's only at idle and only some of the time, it means that pulling up at traffic lights I have to use the throttle to stop it idling and cutting out. Have replaced leads etc. on mine too (cos they gave up completely).

I reckon it's likely to be fuel too, and possibly the fuel pressure regulator (I think that's the thing), it might well be worth swapping that out with an adjustable one.

Regarding power, I've found this to be a good read http://www.mez.co.uk/TuningTheRoverV8-intro.html Not that I've got round to implementing any of it yet though.

Hope you're good, and it'll be ace to see your wedge out again!

I'd check the coolant temp sensor, either that or disconnect the CTS plug, and 'bridge the connections.

Matt, I've had a similar proble with the 350, turned out to be a crap rotor arm / dizzy cap (I know you said don't mention these, but changing them solved the issue)

Hi Matt.

RE cams, a lot of people go silly and buy waaay too hot a cam - race grinds will be worse than useless in a roadgoing rover V8. Kent 214 and possibly 224 if you dont mind a splashy idle.

A cam produces a band of torque of limited width, and the hotter cams make the torque higher up the rev band. More tame cams produce the torque at lower revs. Rover V8 is inherently a low speed stump puller of an engine unless its been severely breathed on...

Also super high lift cams (like >0.500" valve lift) will require roller rockers as the rocker geometry gets rather extreme at those lifts, plus its likely that the valve springs will go coilbound and you'll need to have the spring seats machined just to make the engine turn over. Plus theres always the chance that the valves will clout the pistons on the overlap TDC. People like Rev will be able to advise further as they know more than me.

Bottom line, dont get carried away with silly cams unless you're building a serious engine - they can be trouble. Get a sensible-ish one! Plus the 20trillion BHP they allegedly release will be there from about 9000 to 9005 RPM.

Just my opinion!

Ed.

Could also be throttle pot, timing. Had similar in the past with both.

SAme sort of issue as mine really , and after testing / swapping everything out it is the ecu that is faulty

So in the middle of an ecu upgrade via Megasquirt to do fuel and sparks smile

Matt

a good garage (like david batty or APM) would be able to test the fuel pressure and I think the also test the fail pressure of the fuel pump .. to see if it's on it's way out.

I've got the same adjustable fuel valve as Darren and it's very useful and does come with a pressure guage - which is used for set-up but is not the same full pressure testing kit that a garage may have.

Has the fuel filter been changed lately ? could be blocked.

Had a throttle pot set at too high a voltage and the amplifierwatchermacallit on the side of the dizzy went south. Separate issues. Pot caused intermittent mis fire and eventually flooded it so plugs were also fouled. Amplifierwatchermacallit caused awful misfire and that was me gnashing my teeth at BBWF after getting towed in one year before Wedgers very kindly helped me out.
