Hi everybody, I'm currently venturing into the world of the E46 M3, having owned a few BMW's before, (e39 530i m sport, e46 330ci clubsport, L322 range rover - sort of a BMW, technically!)
I'm looking at this advert for a 2001 m3 SMG in carbon with black nappa.
the car is immaculate, looks like it did when it came from the factory, has full bmw service history (approx every 11k) and lots of documentation. has Nav, 6cdc, Harmon Kardon, Telephone ( not bluetooth, but an actual phone!) Hard top, unmarked 19s
Has facelift LED rear lights
had 4 owners, tax til nov, needs two rear tyres in a few thousand miles (4mm left)

Could you more experienced owners please take a look at the ad and tell me what you think, also how much you think its worth / how much YOU would pay for it. I understand that a car is worth what you're willing to pay for it, but suspect i am going in all guns blazing, and would much appreciate an objective look, from somebody who is not as emotionally attatched! This car is absolutely immaculate, and has not been modified, like many others have.

All help is VERY much appreciated, thanks in advance to anybody who takes the time to help.

Mike

Myke,

It does indeed look very nice. £15k is serious wedge for a 2001 car, but the condition seems to indicate a pampered life with the previous owners. It's an early cab, and I'd expect to be able to get a facelift 2003 model for the same price. However, there are plenty of rough ones out there and I'd always recommend buying on condition, so from that perspective it's positive.

Go and have a look at it outside in the daylight and see if it still looks as good. It should do! smile

Check and double check the service history. It should've had the bottom end recall too. Running in service needs to have been done at around the 1200 mile mark.

I don't see anything in the advert to justify that price to be honest.

So it's got a FBMWSH & just below average miles - but that's nowhere near enough to warrant that price.

Where's the BMW warranty? The tracker? The last service (oil's probably due so it'll need another inspection in 12 months)? Is it wearing PS2s?

That's an old car, that's been well polished. Don't be fooled.

To back this up, glasses guide retail on the car is £12700.

That's all well and good, but I doubt you'd find a decent one for that money.
The one linked too seems overpriced to me, for similar money you can get one from a BMW dealership with a full years warranty (worth roughly £1k).

And that's the dilemma Mike finds himself in. You can get one for £12700, but would you really want it? You can pay £15000 for the same age car, but do should you?

Personally, I'd be looking for a later car, say 2003 facelift with FBMWSH and a stack of receipts for other remedial work, bushes, disks and pads etc. BMW warranty would be nice, but improbable at that age unless bought from a main dealer.

As I said before. Buy on condition and provenance, not on how cheap or otherwise it is and not necessarily on how old it is. I'd take an older, higher mileage car that had been meticulously looked after over a newer, lower mileage car that hadn't.

It is a very good spec and seems to be in good nick but £14,950 is too much imo.

I bought a Sept 2003 Coupe with the same spec, 56,000 miles, BMW warranty for the same money. Note that it is also the end of the summer so it shouldn't really be attracting a summer premium (maybe the current price reflects this).

I'd be looking at at least £1,500 off that price.

Its had Running in service, Service History has been verified (did it myself)
Had an Oil service at 59k (2000 miles ago)
I presume that if the recall hasnt been done, it still could be...?
Its on Michelin PS2's front are good, backs need doing in a few thousand miles.
A few of you mentioned cars available from BMW as AUC, with Warranty etc, for the same money, please could you post a link, as I cant find any for that sort of money; they're all around £18-19k

Had a good look on ebay, autotrader and PH, but cant find any with decent spec (SMG, HK, Nav) with seats that dont look like they've gone five rounds with mike tyson- nearly all the cars I've seen have damage to the seats, on the right hand side, where driver brushes every time he enters, exits car. These ones look really good

Most either have too many miles (I want 65k or less)
Have been modified (dodgy wheels etc- makes me think of chav owning it)
or dont have the spec I'm after.

I can take it for £14,350. What would you do?

Thanks to the people who have already replied, it really is much appreciated,
Help me find a decent one, that doesn't cost the earth!

Please pick holes in the car. You will undoubtedly see things I'm not looking for. Thanks

Right now cars are at top dollar. I have had dealer bids on my M3 above the price I have agreed on a private sale, but I have already agreed with the guy so can't let him down, it is not worth annoying someone for a couple of hundred quid.

I have just been bid more on my A6 avant from Audi than I paid for it in Feb as they want stock, this is with another 12k miles on it, and it was bought from Audi too.

Right now I would say £13500 would be a fair price on that car, if it really is mint and you feel it is worth another £500 odd than get it mate, they are not going to loose a hell of a lot more anyway.

The market is a strange one at the moment, my old man has just been bid £8,000 more on his 730d than he got bid from the sale dealer 3 months ago, and that is £24k up from £16k, we are not talking £8k on a £50k car.

Glasses guide isn't worth sh*t, its just an "excuse" for the dealer to "justify" offering you a pathetic part-ex price, nothing more.

As others have said for a 2001 car thats over priced...

It's had a decent valet and the mileage is below average but isn't exactly low.

I'd not pay anything more than 14k for that car

Seems expensive.

Warranty is out as its being sold by a dealer so even if it did have one before you won't be able to transfer it to you. You won't be able to take out a BMW warranty on it either (though you can get other ones, I have one from AutoProtect but its not quite as good... though with a little help from my local indy mechanic it works out pretty well for me wink )

I own 2003 post facelift model with all the extras (has everything the car you posted has including hard top) and webuyanycar.com gave me an offer of 14,500 on it (I'm vaguely considering selling it but not quite decided yet). I know a car from a dealer will be more than an offer price from that website but even so I think its over priced for an 01 model.

Are there really no other nice M3s out there anymore? There were so many when I bought mine about 3 years ago... actually though granted it was difficult to find one that had widescreen sat nav, HK, SMG and 19s.... and I guess back when I bought mine almost each one of those three options seemed to add 1k to the price second hand.

Personally I'd keep looking if I were you
