Bernie and those bloody medals...

An interesting little article on the F1 website, some of you may have seen, "In Conversation - Bernie Ecclestone and Sebastian Vettel". Didn't take him long to bring up the medal system, did it...

"Do you see a future world champion in Sebastian?"
Will he ever give up? I can't think of anyone else supporting the system.Bernie Ecclestone said:
"Yes. I just wonder what takes him so long. Had they introduced my medal system his chances this year would be even bigger."
There is something rather reassuring about Bernie's inability to let his silly suggestion rest. I mean, here's a self-made billionaire who is, on some matters at least, just about as thick as you can get.
I can't help thinking he's lost it. Most of his quotes I read are waffle. At least in the old days he was often the source of a kernal of truth, even insight. For all the sense you get from him now you might as well talk to an inmate of a home for the terminally bewildered.
He reminds me of next door's dog. It had lost control of most of its back legs and, unfortunately, other things in that region as well. Whilst it was an embarrassment to its owners they kept it alive because, as they said, it didn't seem to notice its failings and thought it was just as good as it ever was. Because it was so ill most of us, whenever we saw it, thought it would be our last opportunity to pet it so it had a very pleasant last few months. D'you think that's the motivation of these reporters who keep talking to him? Just petting him in the expectation that he'll be too far gone in the near future?

It's classic senality. To BE the medals system is a fresh new idea he only thought of yesterday as his burnt-out defunct brain is almost unable to form new memories. To the rest of us with feet firmly still in reality it's like listening to a stuck record.

Bernie really took himself out of the equation nearly a decade ago, when he sold a controlling interest in whatever he was calling his tax-haven operation that week.
Give the man credit, though - until recently he did a brilliant job of creating the illusion that he still ran the show.
Has Bernie totally failed to realise that were his medals system introduced then Jenson would already be a virtually undisputed world champion? The only way anyone could beat him at this stage would be for Vettel to win every single remaining race of the year.
As it stands, we have 4 drivers within 20 points of each other at the top of the table, and anything could happen.

I'd have to disagree. There is no way that he was on top of the game over the last year, when the whole thing almost came tumbling down. Some of his "shoot-from-the-hip" remarks resulted in bullets in his feet. The "Hitler was a good leader, if you put to one side that death camp stuff" insight was mind-bogglingly idiotic, and not conceivably helpful to him. he talks crap to interviewers because he's doing what Gambon does and winds them up!
He's lost his edge. Fair enough, we all do. His problem is that he was so sharp, and had accrued so much power within his own little world, that the fall back to earth has been harder to accept.
BE is now the senile old bloke sitting in the corner with a vacant stare uttering nonsense from time to time. Every now and then somebody pretends to listen then says "yes, Bernie, we know, yes of course - now just let me wipe the dribble from your chin. Thats it, now why dont you just have a nice rest...."

That thought had occurred to me. Not sure how it would work out with the silver and bronze medal tally, but barring another strange (or probably stranger) twist to the season the championship would actually be Button's now. Whereas, with the current system Bernie wants rid of there is a championship alive for a couple of races yet at least. Bernie is right again
