i think the most common response youl get is (inc from me) is dont get st cheap budget friggin tyres! unless you want to increase the chance of killing yourself and possibly others around you. they are the only 4 things that connect the car to the road so why buy st fking crap that as soon as you get some wet weather and you want to do an emengcy stop to avoid hitting a little kid or another car youl just lock up and plough straight into them.
not saying buy the most expensive but for a fraction more you can buy proven decent tyres

rant over lol

What size are they? assuming mk3 astra - 15"? I dont think £45 a corner is cheap. You can pick up most 15" sizes for less than £25 a corner online if you really want to be cheap!

Try some Khumo ecstensa (something like that) tyres. 16" cost me £56 a corner and 15" cost the missus about £45 a corner. They are excellent.

Btw. I suspect that when garages or companies say it is made by so and so, I presume they mean that they only manufacture it. Not, design, test and then manufacture it. The quality of the tyre material wont be down to yokohoma.

Kwik fit offered us some brand made by Pirelli, but didn't fancy them.

We have currently got Falken ze-ix 912's on the Zafira and FK452's on the Astra. Both are just as good as the Michelins and Dunlops they replaced and were about £55-60 fitted.

The Zafira has 15' tyres and the Astra has 16'. The FK452's are the better driving tyre out of the 2.

you find tha garages will quite often say they are great and try and get you to buy suck things, i know a friend who stupidly got talked into buying nangkangs because the garage said he used them on his hill climb car, i soon told him they were ditchfinders and on the way to le mans in the wet they were errrrm abit scary lets say! they do this because they get a bigger commssion/profit from these tyres, best thing to do is simply go on the net and find some proper reviews, if you cant find any for the tyre you want, its probably rubbish.

falkerns are a great shout, budget price just about but a very good tyre and last a decent while aswell.

I've got some Yoko S306's on my Focus, which I suspect might bear a relationship.

They're fine, if wobbly on the limit, in the dry, and stop well enough wet or dry, but wet roundabouts can be interesting, and not really in an entertaining lift off oversteer way, more of a turn in and oh-my-god-there's-absolutely-no-grip-whatsoever, where's the handbrake sort of way.

Don't brand all Nankangs as ste. yes, some are supposed to be but I used to run them on various Fiats I owned and found them far better than the factory recommended pirellis.

There is a reason Yokohama don't sell them as Yokohamas!!!! I avoid any "name" I don't know or can find good positive information about on the web.

Stick to brand names, also make sure that the brand name is written on the tyre itself, not the guy in the depot saying these triangle linglong dictchfinder specials are actually goodyear tyres.

I was left with Nippon-esque somethingorother's on the back of my Omega when I got the car.
Lasted until the next day when it rained heavily on the way to work, then stayed cold and slippery (late Jan 09). I've never been in such peril laugh Large roundabouts were giving me that floaty feeling, small roundabouts were super slow and preparing for corrective actions. Spinning up at junctions on the white lines etc., T/C still enabled. He must have run out of cash after the front Goodyears! A good emergency stop would have aged me fifty years. Lethal.

They were gone by 4PM that day, I left them for safe disposal (incineration I hope). The Goodyears on the back transformed the car thankfully, I was very worried about the mechanicals for a while. I dread to think of some of the faster metal running cheapo rubber.

Why do tyre depot guys always do this?

'Do you have any Continental Sport Contact 3's?

'No but we have Ditchfinder Supreme, they are made by Continental, honest'

Is this like calling Mercedes to enquire about an SL63 AMG to be informed they've got a Smart?

Sava - "Polish Goodyears"
Nankang - "Yokohamas"
Ceat - "Made by Pirelli"
Tigar - "Made by Michelin"

All of the above - bullst.

Some may have some technology sharing, but they're not "made by".

I can't help but ntoice that you're username seems to be very apt!!

Admittedly, I've only tried one set of Nankangs and they were terrible. I put them on the rears of a BMW 328i and they were shockingly bad in the wet. They were actually quite fun, and the poor levels of grip were comedic, but there was no way I'd let my wife drive the car in the wet as they would be quite dangerous if you weren't aware. I got rid pretty quickly.

(To be fair, if you're comparing them to Pirelli P6000's, then you may have a point)

As part of a tyre test I took a set of Nankang NS2s to a track day.

I left these until the end of the event and were the 3rd tyre i used that day. Previous to the Nankang I'd been hooning around on a set of 6 year+ old Bridgestone 010 (to see how old tyres stood up to trackdays)

Anyway, the Nankang NS2 is the "performance" Nankang so I figured it couldn't be that bad, as on the road, if dry and hot like the track was is wasn't awful.

Well, I managed a warm up lap, then half a flying lap before the tyre overheated and started balling rubber on the surface giving absolutely zero grip. It was fun to drift every where but made me realise I'd never want to push that tyre hard on the road.

More grip from bare rims than from Pirelli P6000. Without doubt the worst tyre I've ever used, and I'm including remoulds in that...

yes

Surely for £45 a corner at 15" size you could get a Toyo T1R which will grip like st to blanket compared to the other stuff getting mentioned

Falken FK452s are cheap, and have tamed far more impressive cars than a 1.6 FWD hatchback. These should be at the top of every budget tyre list.

That's what I replaced the Nankangs (see post above) with. Worlds apart.

Thought I'd resurrect this thread after finding it while searching "Prestivo" tyres. My new 325 Touring has come with an almost new pair of 18" Prestivo's on the front and boy are they crap! I've had a couple of hairy moments in the wet on tightish low speed corners and also while braking on smooth tarmac. I have absolutely no faith in them so even though they are new they are coming off to be replaced by something decent.
