New "travel policy" at work contains this :
"Would all members of staff who intend to renew their permit rights for the year 2009/10 please note that, in accordance with the University Travel Policy, the rates for the next academic year are as follows:
Standard rate of £216.00 per year
Payable in full or at a monthly rate of £18.00 deducted from payroll.
Discounted rate of £144.00 per year
Payable in full or at a monthly rate of £12.00 deducted from payroll.
Car-Share rate of £108.00 per year
Payable in full or at a monthly rate of £9.00 deducted from payroll.
Pre-selected day rates:
1 day £43.20 Payable in full.
2 days £86.40 Payable in full or at £7.20 per month
3 days £129.60 Payable in full or at £10.80 per month
4 days £172.80 Payable in full or at £14.40 per month
Pre-selected days are not transferable. "
No definition of what the discounted rate is for, nor any means of registering a car share - and no consultation with the staff before it was introduced.
I read it as "You are no longer permitted to live where you choose, especially if that location has crap public transport and requires you to travel to work, and if WE required you to make visits at any time during the day, we will make YOU pay extra for providing the vehicle which supports our business"
So glad I'm resigning tomorrow - no job to go to, but I can't take this s

It's exactly the same here. I'm exactly the same. 12 miles takes 30 minutes - 40 in traffic.I can cycle but it is a bit longer as I take the canal towpath so 15 miles takes 1h 30m but always the same time.
Public transport is walk - bus - train - train 2 - bus - walk = 2 hours assuming no delays or traffic anywhere.

When I worked for the NHS we had a period of "consultation" about bus and cycle use that resulted in various anti-car policies despite the fact the bus service was inadequate and there was no cycle storage, changing facilities or showersewenm said:

I think I'll stick to the trails thanks.
I wouldnt be able to go to work
2 buses run through the day where I live, one after 9 and one around 4 and the route I would have to take would be massive,
15 miles to Newport
6 miles to Cwmbran
5 miles to where I work
So I would have to leave at 9am already late for work, take 2 hours via busses, work till 1 to get back to home around 4
