Lately a close friend of mine really hasn't been coping with his life, and has now decided that drink is the best answer.
Now so far, I have helped him out in so many ways, from money, to driving 100 miles at the drop of a hat just to make sure he's okay.
At times I ask myself what I get out of this friendship, but I can't imagine not having him in my life at the moment.
So what things have you done for your mates that are above the call of duty so to speak?

Helped tidy a mate up after he had stuff coming out of both ends after a particularly violent drinking session.
Ended up with him being taken to hospital by ambulance (with me in the back, poking my head thru to the driver asking "What size of engine does this have?" , "How fast can it go?", etc
) - I had partaken in the same drinking session.

t''. I used to run a lad around all over the place so he could see his various girlfriends( i was single at the time) including a 140mile round trip just so he could get laid! It all stopped when i found my current OH, he got arsey because i wasnt about when he wanted me to be, so i decided i didnt need someone like that as a friend! Now, apart from OH, and here, i dont have any friends but it doesnt worry me, that way they cant let me down,take advantage etc

This and that. It's not "above the call of duty" though. What goes around, comes around with your friends. Help them - they will help you if and when you need it. If someone takes advantage they aren't your mate.Took / fought a loaded shotgun out of a depressed friends hands once. I was scared witless that it would go off and take his head off, my head off, or both our heads off at the same time.

You do find out who youir true friends are when you need them!
I would do anything for mine and have done some odd things, but I would do it if I felt fairly confident that the same would be done if I needed it. Had to many friends sponge off in the past.
BUT! A good friend would ensure you had adequate supply of alcohol!!

Took the knife from a friend who had already slashed one wrist before he could slash the second. 150 mile round trip at 2am to pick up 2 friends who had missed last train home and had to go to work next day.
I think overall though my friends have gone above and beyond for me more and I love them for it.
