Got a little palm zire (the basic palm) which has infrared and remember reading somewhere that this can be used as an intelligent remote with the right software.

Does anyone know of free software that does this?

Thanks

Richard.

Think theres a program called OmniRemote. There are a few out there, search some of the Palm software download sites.

Managed to sort of get it working on my Sony Clie.

Philips do a version as well to emulate the Pronto

The IR emmiter on palm tops is not reliably powerful enough (different standard to IR from remote controls).

Have a look on home automation webesites and www.avforums.co.uk about an add on emmiter that you can buy for most palm type devices for about £20.

Alternatively, spend some cash on e-bay and get a used pronto 940. I have tried both routes and ended up getting the pronto.

Maplin do a 'remote control via mobile phone kit' for £9.99 (code N34BF). You connect it to whatever appliance you want to turn on/off, then telephone it!

So you pay 10p to switch the TV channel?!

No thanks!

You can do it but its flakey and IrDA was never developed with it in mind.

The only decent one is the CF card with the IR emitter in it for the iPAQ with the pronto style software.

Buy a pronto...

My Ipaq 2210 works fine as a remote for the TV The software it uses is called 'Nevo' and you can set it to operate pretty much any ir device
However I don't tend to keep my Ipaq in the sitting room, so it's just of novelty value really

Plus, you're not there to watch it. Ideal for those crap programmes you don't like!
(though I've often thought that a VCR you can set to record by phone would be handy, eg for when you're out and forgot to set it)

The radio times do a programme for the palm. Shows you TV listings and has full remote control facilities for TV Video and Sattelite.
