skylines - mainly gtr's
Discussion
what experience do people have of these on here? Somebody i used to know had a skyline and it was faster than a version 6 sti impreza, not sure if it was a gtr though - would the gtt's be faster than an sti?
I really want a r34 gtr but i think a bit out of my price range - how are they for reliability and cost, i know there is the potential for big bills but are they generally quite reliable. They are pretty old technology really.
and so what about the r33's? a bit more dated looking but im sure i could learn to love its looks! Again though, even older technology, how reliable are these?

i have owned two GTR's over the past 5 years, and overall they are great cars.
i went from a R33 GTR to a R32 GTR
IMO the R32 is more of a raw car compared to the R33, better on the tracks and you feel alot more comfortable putting it through corners at high speeds.
reliability wise : apart from the normal wear and tear stuff and oil changes i had no problems.
but like any car if you modify them expect to have alot more wear and tear, i have heard that the RB26 engines are good up to 500BHP.
if i had the funds i would definatly go for an R34 love the looks and presence it has,
heard that they are a fine piece of kit on the track too.
bayside blue would be the colour for me like this one;

The R34 GTT is feels like a completely different car to drive its RWD 2.5 and single turbo,
these can be serious fun in the wet

i agree with some of the above statment, i own a R33GTR and i have friends who own sti's evo fq360's rx7's ect NON of them can keep up with me!!!!!(track or road)i went from a R33 GTR to a R32 GTR

R34 GTT AND R33 GTST's are ok but ther is no substitute for a GTR
and the RB25det (gtst/gtt engine)is good for 450-500bhp when tuned a RB26DETT (GTR engine) is good for 800bhp once you fit forged internals(and supporting mods of course) trust me go to a garage and get a test drive in a r33gtr and a r34gtt you will walk away with the 33
but i am a bit biased lol
hope this helps
R34 GTR = old technology ??? Thats a bit harsh! It's not like its running carbs and leaf springs! Active 4WD (ATESSA-ETS), 4 weel steering (HICAS), G sensors, funky MFD display as still seem HiTec to me.
I have an R32 GTR - love it. Very good on track, easy to get big power from BUT only down side against an Impreza is the kerb weight. You need a fair bit more power to keep up with the Impreza (if its tuned). I also have a 2dr Impreza.
Used to have an R33 GTSt. R33 are the softest shape/model, and the GTSt is just pants compared to a GTR.

Adam what is it like running a '32? I am thinking about moving up from the MR2 to something a bit more comfy for long distances (and with back seats).
What rpm are you spinning at 85-90mph on a *cough* private airfield in 5th? And what are they like on long journeys - do you find yourself "bouncing" on the motorway ruts due to stiff JDM suspension?
s these cars are getting on, what are the big bills that come up?
If i was looking at spending 8-9 grand on a mildly modified example (say running a bit more boost, freer breathing and upraded intercooler) are there major things to look out for...along the lines of EDC dampers on an M5 costing loads. Are clutches and other consumables prohibitive? Is there a mileage when a rebuilt becomes recommended?

I run my R32 GT-R daily, probably about 10k+ miles a year in it and its (knock on wood) never had a problem.
In terms of running costs, as long as your pockets can afford the fuel then you should be alright, i get around 16-17mpg on my 20mile journey into work which is part a-roads roads, part city driving, Servicing isnt ridicuous, my last service was around 150 probably (engine flush, all the oils changed and a look at a few bits and bobs)
I guess with standard suspesnion it could be considered reasonably comfortable.... i wouldnt know since i've got Tein HA adustible suspension which arent really suited for driving over cobbles and potholes, but its relaxing enough after a few hours on the motorway. I do have a sprung exhaust baffle does a good job to make the car virtually silent when i'm cruisng for extra comfort(and fully open and noisy when i'm blatting down a country road)
I think rebuilds/and replacing clutches etc depend largely on the driver... I know folk that have gone through multiple GT-Rs, blowing gearboxes, engines and clutches, but at the end of the day i dont think its a fault in the car more just the driver treating the car like crap and/or bad modifications. Then again what car isnt going to blow up if your rag it around constantly, launching it off traffic lights and driving on the rev limiter so it shoots flames. Though occasionally it can just be bad luck, and come down to the age of the car, and the unknown of how the previous owners have treated it.

Not particularly a fan of the R33 looks but love the R32, it would be my choice. I know there are fans and follows of the GTS models, but for me they are bit like alcohol free beer. GTR is the only way to go.
They are fast capable cars in stock trim, but they are fairly heavy and rather large, so if you are used to a 800kg hatch it will be a very different kettle of fish.
Loads of tuning scope, however from what I've read its nowhere near as easy or cheap as some claim it to be. If you want the BIG hp then you'll pay for it in terms of internal engine parts and new turbochargers.
Its all there for the taking however.
The biggest thing or complaint I've read is some people simple don't find them that exciting to drive due to how clever the AWD system and other computer aided controls are.
Reliability wise I'm sure they are very good, but its a big, complex and pricey car. I'm sure if something does go wrong it can be pricey to fix. But that's true of most performance cars.

cant comment on R34 GTR's but R32's dont drive them selves.
The ATESSA (all wheel drive system) puts more power to the rear on corners to give the car RWD characteristics. It will only shift torque to the front when it detects slip from the rears and you are near enough straight (low lateral G's)

Im currently running 550ish on standard internals and touch wood no problems. I had the choice of a 33 or a 32 and i couldn't buy the 33 it just felt heavy, slower and soft. The 32 feels alot more nimble due to the size and the reduced curb weight of a 33 is very noticiable. The only think i would say though is there great for the motorways and A roads but an Evo or a Scooby will be quicker round the B Roads.

Mine isn't. Really is a matter of opinion (or taste)... 4wd vs 2wd...I have an R32 GTR - love it. From my experience both the GTR and GTSt are 'pants'... when standard
