My GTR has just been dyno'd after I sold it MAD

I recently sold my GTR - too many cars and and not enough space or time to store or enjoy (7 other cars in the collection!).
Anyway - after a short lay up she was given a freshen up ready for completing the deal.
Little did I know - she made 733 bhp this morning on the dyno!!!!
Had to drop the rev limiter to protect the hewland NLT gearbox (rated at 550lb/ft).
Basically the lump can rev to between 8,500 and 9,000rpm but the higher you rev the quicker the refresh is required.
She made 733 at 7,500rpm but she is safe to 8,750rpm in bursts so as the power was still climbing I would say that she could have made 750+ which in sub 1,000kg will be fun!!
Mark Frisby at Rapid GB (he built the beast of a motor) obviously known his onions as even at 6,500rpm (to limit the torque to save the box) she still made 688bhp and 534lb/ft!!!!
Good look to the new owner and look out if you are on track in europe and see this thing as you are going to get your arse kicked.
Can't expose the new owner but he bought:
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1118328.htm from me and will scare himself silly!!.
Enjoy.

BTW - the new exhaust system (built by www.pipewerx.co.uk) was under the Bruntingthorpe noise limit (87.5 - 93db) during testing yesterday even at 180mph in the wet!!!
It also flowed enough to make the 733bhp and still be quiet (the system is the best £2,ooo I have ever spent) as we removed the system on the dyno and there was no power gain.
No more to say really.

Did you have a static noise test done on the car?, if so, what was the result?
I have spoken to Ian with regards to doing something for me on the GTW and he seems to think the only real way forward is to have an add on type silencer that is fitted outside the body work and is attached only when at a track.
Is there any chance you could put up some pictures of the system on the Ultima?, thanks.

Wayne, theres some nice pics of the exhaust on his advertI have spoken to Ian with regards to doing something for me on the GTW and he seems to think the only real way forward is to have an add on type silencer that is fitted outside the body work and is attached only when at a track.

no problem..
interestingly we used to find on the bikes we got alot of noise from the airbox or lack of it....
Even if you have the best silencer in the world, do you get alot of noise from the inlet side of the system, or do you guys run an airbox or filter on your injection units?

I have an air-box with a Mosler air filter and enclosed air feed from the raised scoop on the rear clip. The problem with a built motor is mechanical noise from solid lifters and believe or not even a thick cast ali rocker box cover as opposed to the fabricated ali type can make a readable difference on the noise meter.
Obviously the exhaust system itself is the single most important piece of the puzzle that needs very careful consideration when trying to make an Ultima track quite but the under clip cacophony also needs a bit of constructive thought too.
As you know, Goodwood is my local track and also one of the most strict when it comes down to noise pollution but interestingly although an Ultima may have a very high static reading, the drive by is never a problem.
Once cracked, this noise problem thing will be a thing of the past I am sure but we need to get some kind of formula that can be applied to ANY variation

totally agree with what you are saying...
Some sound deadening under the clip will help with lifter noise etc etc or even blackets like they run on ytop fuel cars to stop the blowers coming off.....
I run a reverie airbox fed by the clip as you will remember and that is great... i even took it off the other day to see carb changes running open carb and it ran richer at low and high speed compared to box being on... great item..
shame you did not go the turbo route otherwise noise wouldnt be the problem and i know you are going to still hate me for saying this but im still thinking V8 twin turbo diesel is the route of the future.....hahahahhaha go on kick me in the ?? again for saying it...hahhahaha

I’m the mad fool that bought the beast!
Mark at Rapid GB is sorting out a couple of things and I plan to get out to for a couple of track days at the end of next week / beginning of the following week so I’ll let you know about the noise limits, but it seem pretty quite.
Mark took the 3rd silencer off as I thought it would boost the power a bit however it LOST 20 bhp! So I have to say that it’s well engineered silencer system.
I’ve already e-mailed Hewland to see what is required to boost the torque limit of the box, I know, I know….. but 733 sound like more fun that 688 doesn’t it?
As a side note if you ever need to buy a car, buy it from Nick he’s been an absolute star and always straight up about everything, not to mention more than helpful!! Thanks!
