I've just got myself an early freelander and I'm very pleased with it except when its on full lock - it feels like the drive train is winding up rather like my old Cherokee did when in full time 4wd and on tarmac.

Also the turning circle is rubbish - is this normal? I've only ever had Jeeps in the past so not sure if something is amiss here or not

A bit late lol.

I think that what you are saying is that when on a full lock your Freelander almost comes to a halt. This is a normal characteristic of the Freelander, it's just the way the transmission works. My 04 Diesel was the same. Here is a Landrover bulletin about it:

Bulletin Number - 0001

Issue - 1

Date - 21.01.1998

Model - Freelander

Affected Range - All vehicles

Re-Issue Information -

Problem -

BRAKING EFFECT WHEN ON FULL LOCK

When maneuvering on full lock at low speed, resistance to rolling is felt in both forward and reverse directions.

Cause

Characteristics of the viscous coupling employed in the transmission which result in slight ‘wind up' between front and rear wheels.

Action

Do not attempt to rectify this condition as it is a characteristic of the model. In the event of customer complaint, explain to the customer that there is no fault with the car and that this is a normal effect which is noticeable on vehicles which employ a viscous coupling in the ‘drive line'.

I hope this answers your question.
