COP SPEED CAMERAS FLASH AND GRAB £17M
COPS running Britain's busiest speed cameras raked in a whopping £4.6MILLION in fines in a year.
Police in the Thames Valley region were so good at making a fast buck out of the hated road traps, they even handed over £2million to the Government.
But it still left the force with £2.6million profit to plough back into MORE cameras.
New cash-from-cameras statistics (see panel below) show Thames Valley police gave Mr Brown nearly three times as much as their nearest "rivals".
Second placed Northants stumped up £719,000 while Lincolnshire and Essex cops each gave over £500,000.
But now ministers have sent letters to local authorities which could mean four out of five cameras being dismantled. They remind councils they were only meant to site the cameras on dangerous roads and not just to raise cash.
That means they should pull down any which do not meet the criteria, although the Government cannot compel them to do so.

There will be some red faces at those camera partnerships. What this shows is that they failed to spend what they earned, I seem to recall seeing on here a breakdown of the spending one are had made. The £450,000 for a new headquarters new vehicles etc made a big hole in their income so no money for Gordon. A clever accountant, I'm married to one, could drop alsorts into this bottomless pit so no money would ever be seen by the treasury.
