Out of idle curiosity..

those chaps that I see huddled around the marine in Brighton from time to time, dangling their pieces over the edge (no, not those ones, the other ones; the fishermen..)

what fish are they hoping to catch? and is it for food or sport or both?

- Can't help but think it's real dedication to the cause when I see them all wrapped up for an 'all nighter' in the freezing nights of winter.

Any ideas what's likely to be on the menu?

Mackerel and pollock maybe?

Used to catch Mackerel off my uncles boat in Plymouth as a youngster smile

Go to scotland every year and do a bit off casual fishing off our dinghy. Mainly catch mackerel, coley and pollock. We have a portable smoker so we end up eating smoked fish for dinner every day!

Fishing is a bloody good way to relax. Whap your rod out (wey hey!), swing it out as far as you can, open a beer, sit down and wait. Every so often you may get the excitement of possibly catching something, which is actually far more satisfying than it sounds.

Never went sea fishing. Wouldn't mind having a go at some point though.

Used to fish by the riverside. Good fun wink

Ah that brings back memories, I used to do the same (from my father's boat, not your uncle's....unless you happen to be my long lost cousin).

I never saw the point in sitting around for hours on end - catching a fish just to throw it back in. Much prefer beach casting but due to the convenience I tend to do more fly fishing than anything these days.

Done quite a bit around the shores of North Wales, you can catch anything from Mackrel to Bass, Cod, Coley, Pollock, Dog Fish... Can eat most of it. Nothing better than getting stuck into a shoal of Mackrel and catching 4 or 5 at a time.

shout Big Al your thread is here.

My OH went out with Al a couple of weeks ago off Selsey. Beautiful Skate and Sea Bass. Will let Al enlighten you to the joys of sea fishing.

Ive just got back into sea fishing! I tend to fish of my sit on top sea kayak! been catching a fair few Pollock, Wrasse and Mackerel, with the odd little Bass in for good measure. I very much go sea fishing for the table though I do find it very theraputic and relaxing! I also do a spot of course and game fishing too!

I've wondered this as well, especially as the water is filthy. There's a sewage outlet just past the Marina.

A friend who dives there was unlucky enough to catch some of the outfall - he said the fish were gobbling it up!
