Alps Trip - some early thoughts please
Discussion
Hi
I have started planning an Alps trip for next summer - early I know - and could do with some input from those who have toured the area.
My initial thoughts are that we will travel out across N France spending a couple of days/nights doing this and then want 2 bases in the Alps in which to spend 2 nights, so 4 nights in all. This will allow for a full days exploring at each base. We will then swing up through Germany and spend 2-3 days coning back to Blighty that way.
So what I could do with is some advice on the...
- 2 x 2 night Alpine section. We are looking for decent hotels with safe, secure parking (for the P&J) on a B&B basis. Hotels should be near to restaurants, bars etc for evening choice and also provide a good base for exploring traversable (by car) mountain passes. We want to do the Stelvio as I did this a few years ago but want my wife to see it. Would folks recommend 2 nights in Switzerland and then 2 nights Austra/Italy??
- travelling back through Germany bit. I have been to Munich before which is nice and I guess Bavaria is beautiful. What about further up country? Any suggestions (bearing in mind that the last night will be our last place to stay before a hop through to the Chunnel so will need to be towards that direction.
I know these are favourite type trips for all you PH-ers so heres hoping...
Cheers

Best place for you to start is this great site
www.alpineroads.com
Should give you a few ideas where to go and you can keep an eye on the open/closed status of all the passes. Go Mid June onwards to guarantee all the high stuff is open.

we did an alps trip this year which I can highly recommend you do it. we did someting along the lines of
Day 1 - drive to spa
Day 2 - Spa trackday
Day 3 - driver down to switzerland
Day 4 - drive around the swiss alps, finishing in saint moritz
Day 5 - few more swiss passes and off to Italy to do stevio finishing in Innsbruck, Austria
Day 6 - A few austria passes and then drive up to south of germany
Days 7-9 - Nurburgring
Day 10 - Home and it was all over, wishing it could have lasted longer.
I was quite an expensive trip but well worth it, I'm quite sure we'll do another soon.
If you PM Gman I think he kept details of the best passes we found.

we can point you in the right direction in terms of routes, hotels and must see/must avoid places.
plus the time of year you go is quite key too.
happy to either throw you some free advice, book something for you or get you on a group tour...
totally up to you.
we did this in July this year.......
