OK, what else to check.....?

OK, 3 months into Griff ownership and I popped it down to the garage as the MOT is looming so I thought I'd start the usual checks so avoiding an unpleasant suprises at the test station. (I have a friend who owns a little non-MOT garage)
Checked out the headlamps and they seemed a little yellow and grubby (enough to be a def. MOT failure and pretty useless on any dark, muddy, pothole ridden ditch of a back lane that pass for roads around here). Looks like previous side light bulbs have failed and there's been some burning on the little white light fittings so I've got yellow dust on the inside and outside of the lens, which is usually a quick wipe with an oily rag and off you go..........ha!
So, questions:
- Has anybody come up with any better access panels than a simple lump of GRP, 4 wood screws and a bucket load of mastic?
- Surely, there must be a better way to hold the whole pod in place rather than another bucket load of mastic, a small screw through the top of the indicator lamp and a weak bit of Mecanno at the rear?
- How can you clean out the inside of the Cibie unit once you've got it out from the car? Thankfully, most of the crap was on the front of the lens.
- How do you setup the headlamp alignment with the front of the car jacked up in the air on trolley jacks?
As I'm going through this slightly over-kill operation to do a bit of spring cleaning (one unit down, one to go), any other suggestions as to mods whilst I've the mastic gun in my hand?
