Its time to replace the rear tyres if not all four. Advive needed please. Car currently has 18' 265/35 contisports. Can u still buy these as i couldnt find them on the pirelli website. Pirelli on their website reccomend p zero rosso. Views please , any recomendations. Should i stick with pirelli ? How about pilot sports? I perhaps should add that i rarely use the car in the wet and living in cornwall dont do many track days.

Whatever you do make sure you shop around. The price difference between the high st and indpendents is massive..up to 70%.

Try 911 design. I think they do entire sets of Rossos for £600.

I've no experience of the Boxster in the long term, but on a 996 at least I have found the Conti's to have superior wet weather grip to the Pirellis.

Might be worth bearing in mind. What price a fresh set of conti's?

Mate....you got there first! Contis are indeed Continentals.
I have only just bought my 2001 Boxster S but I was delighted to see that it was fitted with 18" Contisport Contacts. This is because this tyre did very well in the last Evo magazine tyre test. The Goodyear Eagle was the only tyre to beat it, but whan you looked at how the results were worked out, the Conti was a better all-rounder IMHO. The Goodyear picked up points in areas I'm not so bothered about.....the mag looked at stuff like road noise and wear rates. The Conti had great wet and dry performance, and basically that's all that matters to me.
I use a local tyre discounter. I would ring 'round loads of dealers and then get your local fitter to price match if possible.

Hi Chris, I'm in Cornwall as well and I've just replaced the rears on my Box S, they are the same size as yours but mine is fitted with Dunlop SP 9090s which came out top in a couple of reviews I found on the net. They are certainly very good as far as I can tell - the last ones lasted for about 13k, are very good for grip (wet or dry) and they also have 'beading' that is proud of the wheel rim so avoiding kerbing. I have posted on here about the price before but to summarise; I shopped around for some time and found prices varying from £650(!) down to £399 (unfitted) for the pair. I then found myself in Kwik Fit in Falmouth buying a piece of exhaust for the Land Rover and noticed their 'We beat any price' posters so asked for a price for the tyres. The manager said 'They're normally £210 each but I could do them for £350 the pair fitted and balanced including VAT' needless to say I ordered them there and then and they were fitted a week later! They were initially a bit tentative about dealing with my split rims (weren't sure whether they were two or three piece splits) so took advice from Carrs in Exeter and had no problems. I was pretty impressed with the service - especially their taking advice when unsure.

I just fitted Dunlop SP 9090s to my rear wheels at Kwik fit. They quoted £450 but charged £400 without me even asking. I reckon its always worth asking for a discount, prices seem very flexible

Careful, only certain tyres are N rated and approved by porsche. i think they're:
PZero
Contisport
Pilot Sport

and one or two more that i can't remember.

I think you mean Z rated - over 150mph (see here). SP 9090s are the Porsche approved version of the SP9000s and are ZR rated.

Indeed agent006 is right! Porsche use an N rated tyre which is only made by certain makers for Porsche. The compound is different (softer I think) to work a lot better with the car… you will notice the difference when you are driving the Porsche as it should be!

I would expect there to be warranty issues with using non-approved tyres.

Oh come on! I've heard this urban myth so many times now. Please - if _anyone_ has had any _real_ experience (i.e. not a friend of a friend of somone they heard about on usenet etc.) of warranty issues regarding non N-rated compound tyres please speak up, I've yet to hear of any substantiated claims.

There was a thread a while back about whether Insurance investigators would raise quibbles with your claim if you had a crash and found you were using non N-rated compound tyres, and the result of this was that this was proved incorrect too.

Please, if anyone _knows_ different please share.

Never said there WAS, just there could be if a dealer wanted to get out of doing some free stuff. Given the downright arrogance of most porsche delaers i wouldn't be the least bit surprised.

You need to check what has been approved for your particular car / year / wheel combination - Porsche do a list every year, published in Christophorus (don't ask).

2000 list at http://p-car.com/technical/tires.htm
find your own after that sorry .....

Cheers, Maurice

In the US (don't know about the UK), it is not an urban legend: you can void your factory warranty by fitting non-Porsche approved tires. Porsche approval is signified by the addition of the code Nx, which is above and beyond the speed rating (V or Z or whatever). Back to the original topic of this thread, when the Pirelli P Zeros fitted at the factory to the 18" Sport Designs on my '99 Boxster wore out, I replaced them with Dunlop SP 9090s, which are N0-rated. I have about 4K miles on them now, and find the Dunlops are a smoother riding and quieter tire than the P Zeros. Also, they have better wet weather grip (not an academic consideration here in drippy Portland, Oregon). I don't think the Dunlops have the ultimate dry grip of the P Zeros but would recommend them for consideration for daily drivers, especially in damp climes.
