Been told by SWMBO that if I want another motor the capital has to come from selling other pointless toys...

Therefore the IWC Portuguese Perp Calendar II probably has to go. Love it to bits but only wear it occasionally (a bit bling for a work environment).

I've sold a couple of Rolex and a JLC before but never any of my high-end stuff.

Any ideas who / where? It's 3-4yrs old so probably in need of a service, will dealers factor that in? I can get a bid in Aus but will be back in the UK in a month or so so wouldn't mind seeing if there's someone who can give an indication over the phone. I bought it in HK (though from an authorised IWC dealer) and have all boxes and papers, would that have an impact vs buying somewhere with less of a reputation?

Morning SP,

Are we talking about the IW502119 (44.2mm) or the IW502213 (42.3mm)?

Probably better to give it a punt on the likes of TZ-UK first to a private buyer, you will more than likely get a lot more cash for it that way!

Sorry can't help but I'd just like to say that's a stunning watch.

Wish people wouldn't say things like that, guys at work said the same today! Heart set on a 993 S so it has to go.

I'm not so sure - it would probably be the most expensive watch ever advertised/sold on TZ-UK so would stand out a bit.

Try timezone.com. There are some incredibly expensive watches on there - mostly US, but an occasional big ticket European item.

It would certainly be close to it, but I've seen PP's up for sale at circa £20k.

Anyway - You can't just join & sell straight away.

That's true you can't. You have to rack up 50 posts on the watch talk forum for some reason. And so you try to do that by asking questions about stuff you're interested in/don't understand - only to be slagged off by the resident anoraks for not using the search function properly! This makes racking up the 50 a long winded process - particularly if you like watches for the way they look and feel rather than their technical specification, and therefore have nothing to contribute to the myriad threads about the relative merits of various obscure movements. While all this is going on, the watch you wanted to sell is siezing up and now needs a service. So it would have been cheaper to sell it to a dealer in the first place.

The other way to reach the magic 50 is to simply reply with the words 'Congrats. Looks lovely' or similar to the dozen or so folk who post up a photo' of their latest purchase every day. This has the additional benefit of ingratiating yourself to the forum members, thereby reducing the likelyhood of them telling you you've bought a tasteless piece of crap when you post up your latest purchase.

I cannot believe you are selling a Perp! It's my favourite watch and if I am honest a grail of mine.
Good luck selling the watch, as far as internet sales goes I would recommend TZ as your best place.

Beautiful piece. A genuine bit of horological history, and stunning-looking to boot. Build quality beyond reproach.

Fifty quid in used tenners?

hehe The 50 post request is so it isn't spammed by people just wanted to sell watches but visited by people interested in watches. I managed to achieve 50 posts quite quickly and wouldn't say I have much interest in movements beyond perhaps "What's this movement? Can I change the hands cos they're crap?" And it's no different to PH. You can post a thread about whether wearing men make up on their haemmoroids poses a problem when dating women while purchasing a car between £5000 and £7000 if you want to.

I know, I was exaggerating a little for (hopefully) comedic effect. Although you must admit there's more than a grain of truth. I do find TZ quite entertaining for various reasons, but do feel things aren't as straight forward there as they'd like you to think. There's a strict 'no dealers' policy and yet there are folk on there offering several watches at a time...all the time. I'm not sure where 'enthusiast' stops and 'dealer' starts (and don't have an issue with buying from either) but I do object to being led up the garden path.

So outside of Dominic, and assuming I don't want to sell direct, who are the dealers to talk to?

I'd have thought these two for a start:

http://www.daviddugganwatches.co.uk/

http://www.blowers-jewellers.co.uk/

Both deal in high end stuff, and will probably make a bid. Don't know how good it will be though.

Might alo be worth talking to one of the auction houses - Hong Kong Christies have a big (and well-earning) watch action every quarter or so...
