I'm going to give the S a good spraying underneath with waxoyl and whilst I've used a brush last few times it was abit tricky to get everywhere so I decided to try and get my old Jumbo Waxoyl Sprayer going again - that's one of the hand held items that you pump with your finger. I tried it a while ago and couldn't get it to work so thought I'd have another go. The problem appears to be priming it but as all the pipes appear to be clear maybe I'm missing something so any wisdom about getting them going again - I did give it a good clean with white sprits last time but maybe its now just too old or something? Not a disaster as the local factor does them for £9.70 +vat (and the 5L of clear for £16.32 + vat) but it would be good not to have to buy another one if possible.

I use an ordinary domestic garden sprayer with the waxoil diluted with white spirits. In winter it also helps to warm the waxoil before spraying. Neat waxoil is too thick for most sprayers to handle, if you are not sure whether the sprayer is working try spraying white spirits first. If that won't spray you need to unblock it, or replace it.

I suspect you are right Peter - the idea of using the Wxoyl sprayer rather than a garden one is that there is an adaptor that comes with it which has a thin tube which can be used to spray (eg) inside doors or whatever and this will be ideal to get all round the tops of the side rails and inside the trailing arms, etc. rather than try and fiddle round with a small brush. I suspect the garden sprayer is no better (or cheaper?) in those terms or can you fit something to do that?

Waxoyl... now there's a job I hope never to do again. I did my S3 lower chassis and fuel tank last year, a warm day in May if I recall correctly. I bought a Waxoyl 'pump-up' pressure sprayer and followed the instructions, including dunking the can in a bucket of hot water for an hour in advance. Pumped it up, and off I went - spray spray spray, great! Then I stopped spraying for a minute, the waxoyl in the spraygun and pipe cooled, and the sprayer clogged up. Peter's tip of diluting with white spirit is a good one - if it won't spray at ambient temperature, don't bother!

I ended up doing most of mine with a brush, and only spraying (quickly!) those areas I couldn't reach with a brush.

There are now only two jobs I would entrust to a garage -the annual MOT test and waxoyling!!!

Good luck and have fun,
Graham

This is a true story from when I used to work at Halfords (sorry).

Man comes in and buys Waxoil in a can.
Following week, man returns and complains that since putting waxoil in the engine his car no longer runs.
Everyone laughs at him.
