Castrol magnetic 5-30W ok for 1998 XJR?
Discussion
Quick question chaps... I'm suppling all the parts for a service on the old XJR and a friend has bought a load of Castrol Magnetic 5-30W.
Unfortunately I'm working away so I've not got the owner's manual. So I wonder if someone could tell me if it's OK to use?
Also, does anybody know how many litres I will need for the oil change? Again I've not manual.
Thanks in advance guys, as ever any help is appreciated.

i think 5w-30 might be alittle thin for that particular engine version. i think it was afer 2001 when they did the engine revision and went to 5w-30?
I'm no expert but I can't see that being a problem?I was under the impression that the "winters" measurement was only an issue if you were running it in an unsuitable climate. I.e. 5-30W isn't suitable for hot climates but should be ok for the s

'98-99 engines are AJ26S (supercharged) which are supposed to use 10w-40 oil. AJ27S (post 2000) use 5w-30 oil. what the differences are to the engines i don't know. opieoils states 10w-40 for a '98 xjr and 5w-30 for a post 2000 model year.
Can anyone shed any light on the differences in the engine numbers?

It really depends on mileage. 5/30 may create a smoker if it is a high miler.
try a 10/40.
Just done over 70K and, to the best of my knowledge, it's been running on 5-30W since 2003. No smoke, compression tested a few months back and all was well. Aside from a stry a 10/40.
te battery it's been running tip top.Is it definately worth paying a considerable amount more for 10-40? Seems a hell of a shame not to get it at a bargain price...

Sorry but, if you have used 5/30 for years and intend to carry on using it , Why the doubt??
I`m pleased your car doesn`t burn 5/30 some high milers do, some don`t.
Well two reasons (1) I am quite possibly one of the most paranoid car owner's in the world and (2) I was curious what the general concensus was.I`m pleased your car doesn`t burn 5/30 some high milers do, some don`t.
In many ways an 11 year old Jaguar was not the logical choice for a man such as myself.
Cheers for the input!
