Hello, I've got a 97 Golf CL 1.9 TD with 150k, this morning i saw oil over the drive, looked under the car, nothing from the sump, then check the coolant and oil in there and all around the coolant reservoir. Any ideas what's gone wrong and how to fix?

Cheers

Rich

Sounds like a head gasket failure to me.

Could be, but unlikely. Oil cooler far more likely, if its got the coolant to oil heat exchanger oil cooler than the Audi's have.

How would I find out if it does?

Remove the two water hoses from the heat exchanger (the base of the oil filter) and join them together with a metal sleeve.
Drain, flush and refill cooling system,(with just water at this stage) then start the car and leave it ticking over, if the heat exchanger is leaking, oil will eventual start coming out of the ferruls where the pipes have been removed from.

You could just drive it with the heat exchanger bypassed (it would be o/k for a short time) and see if oil comes out.

If you meant how do you know if its got an oil cooler, just look. Its a squarish thing under the oil filter, between the oil filter housing and the filter its self with two hoses coming out.

As above I'd just bypass it if it was mine, bit of copper pipe two hose clips, done.

You have to flush the cooling system loads of times with detergent to get the oil out once its been in there, It never completely goes away, sticks to the inside of the header tank.
