I've an intermittant fault where my speedo registers 0 until I get to around 70-80 and then springs into life, it then stops again when my speed drops below 50.

Rather than drive around at 80 what is the best way of cleaning the sensor (and finding it!).

Not obvious from the bible.

If I remove the drivers rear wheel will I have access?

Any help or pics appreciated

Depends what year the car is as to which and where the sensor is fitted. Mines a '97 and it's on the rear of the diff drivers side. It's easier to get to if you put the car on ramps.

As locodude says for location and access, may get away with adjusting to a smaller gap about .008" AFAICR, thou suspect like mine last year it needs a new sensor, and by the time you have finished arguing with getting the old one out you will probably need a new mount bracket as well. smash

Mine failed on the way back from the ring this July, I replaced it with a brand new one from TVR power who were the cheapest by far. 10 thou gap by the way (.25mm).

worth trying to adjust before buying a new one, although if nothing has been changed in that area and it has suddenly started doing so I'd guess it may have given up.

As previously said on the drivers side of the diff. Quite easy to adjust, I used a set of feeler guages to adjust the clearance. Mine did exactly the same but at around 50mph, but this was after a diff out and hadn't been adjusted properly.

thanks Edward, is it easy to find? could I have accidently sprayed waxoyl on it?

I'm no mechanic but am practical and will have a go at anything.

Nothings been changed so I was just going to check gap and clean

Cheers

If you look up from underneath the car at the diff then it is on the right of the diff. It resembles threaded cyclindrical object with 2 wires out the end that is mounted in a bracket pointing at the toothed wheel. Unfortunatly I don't have a picture. It will have a locking nut that locks agianst the bracket. Once this is loosened it abjusted using the flats on the end. If you have recently been waxoiling then I would presume it is very possible to inadvertantly coat it. My first action if that is what you suspect would be to get a white spirit soaked cloth and work throught he gap between the sensor and the toothed wheel. Although it is easy to adjust I always find getting spanners up there a pain. No doubt someone will be along shortly to say you can access it from the wheel arch, I've never tried.
