Hi everyone

Happy New Year!

My ear calipers on my 1994 4.0 chimaera keep sticking on, if i apply the brakes a few times they sometimes unstivck themselves but alot of the time they drag.

Has anyone else had this problem? I am planning on taking them off and stripping them down and giving them a good clean, not too sure what to clean to stopp them from sticking though?

Any ideas?

Cheers

Dale

Obvioulsy you don't need to be told that binding rear brakes on one of these is .
Not had a problem nyself, but I personally would check to make sure the handbrake mechanism is not doing the binding first. Failing that remove pads clean up with brake cleaner, work the pistons a few times and re-assemble not foprgetting to coppercrest the shims/backing plate.

As they are standard ford parts you can probably get a seal kit for them quite easily.. if the pistons are scored though, you'd be better off finding some more calipers from somewhere..

Cheers
Matt.

I have checked the handbrake mechanism and that works fine.

Im sure it is the caliper itself as i have checked the handbrake mechanism and thats been working fine.

Ill strip them down and give them a clean up.

Couple of possible causes. The easiest one to spot is accumulated dust stuck to the frame that the pads slide in. This should be cleaned off each time the pads are changed, but if this hasn't been done they can stick. The other potential problem is the slides that the caliper floats on. If these are badly worn the caliper can jam on, holding one pad (usually the outer) against on the disc. Could be the slides just need cleaning up and a bit of grease but if they're badly worn they will need to be replaced. Other less likely causes are a gummed up master cylinder not retracting the piston far enough to open the port to the reservoir, if you have this problem the brakes will usually come on harder and harder as the brakes warm up until eventually the whole thing seizes up solid. This is pretty obvious though and the problem is far more likely to be at the caliper.
