Snake experts please

There's no wild animals section, so I thought here would do. I spotted this (sadly dead) snake on a bike ride last night

Anyone know what variety it is ? It was pretty large.

Looks like an Adder to me. Only seen a couple and that was a few years ago now (Both dead) but if that is in England can't think of what other breed it could be.

I'm fairly sure it's a Grass Snake.

Adders have a thick black zig zag down their back.

Hardly a rare breed the Flat Snake.

We see them from time to time over here in Oz often in a similar habitat

On second look I agree, I saw the diamond patterning on side of the snake and forgot that grass snakes have this. Definitely not enough markings for an adder.

Can't see the top of the head, so can't identify... a viper (adder) has a typical V on it's head as well as the diamond markings.

Another vote for grass snake. Big for an adder and too green/wrong pattern. But marks at back of head not clear, which is easiest way to identify a grass snake.

I was amazed first time I found one of these (in our pond) that we have anything that size in this country, 1m is average, up to 2m. They mostly live in water (latin name is "water snake") so where "grass snake" comes from is anyone's guess.

Thank the lord we my Wife doesnt look at Pistonheads (or go for bike rides). She wouldnt leave the house for a week or we would have to move to Ireland.
