How do I connect my ipod to the Audi MMI?

Hi everyone, I am a proud and slightly over-excited new owner of an A8 on an 05 plate, SE spec, got the MMI with satnav, phone, toys, cd player etc, but the one thing it won't do at the moment is let me listen to my ipod. I rang the Audi dealer who quoted me £360 + VAT + fitting for the official kit. That seems hellish steep to me - does anyone here know of anything that will do the job more cost-effectively?

Pics are always nice . Nice car, there are few options but its best to get the official kit off eBay. Not sure if there is one available for the A8. I'll have a look for you.

Ok a quick search and the price Audi quoted you is around the same if not more than eBay sellers. Price on the Dension site (people who make it for Audi I think) is £369.97 excluding fitting. Fitting is easy but I wouldn't mess about with an A8 personally but I'm not a very do it yourself guy anyway.

Thanks for looking, that's a help. It seems very pricey, but I guess the kit allows you to manage the ipod via the MMI interface so is complicated. I was wondering if there was a lower tech way to do it, playing the music as an external input, but controlling the ipod manually?

Fm transmitter?...

thats what i use, but my phone has an in-built fm transmitter any way.. but i know people who have them for their i pods. around the £25 mark.

Never been a big fan of the FM transmitters personally. OP why not just get some CDs burnt? I'm sure MP3 CDs (100's of songs on one disc) will go in an A8.

Bite the bullet and get the Dension kit, it's very good

I have the Dension Gateway 500, it's fantastic, my car didn't have bluetooth as standard, but I added a bluetooth module to the gateway 500 and I can use my iPhone now

Installation was quite easy, I put mine high up on the passenger footwell, mind you I did work as an auto-electrician for a few years, so that might have helped!

Ta fellas. I tend to drive from Oxford to Manchester twice a week, so the number of times i would have to retune a FM transmitter makes it a bit of a hassle. Sounds like the official kit is the right answer.

Looks like I may need to take a deep breath, cash in those Lehmans Brothers shares I've had tucked away for a few years now. I wonder what they're worth these days.....?

Isn't his main dealer cheaper?

£360 + VAT is 414, then main dealer labour to fit it...

Also if Audi are quoting to fit AMI they'll sting you another 30 odd quid for the iPod cable on top of that.

Dension kit is £449 fitted including VAT, ipod cable, USB and Aux in.
