Not sure if this should go in Holidays, or Motorracing - so I stuck it here in the hope someone would read it biggrin

is there somewhere 'motorsport friendly' that hires Motorhomes on a 3 day weekend basis? (about 12 times a year)

oh and it'll need a tow hitch.

TopBoy used a firm in Derby somewhere for the GP, I'll ask him to let you have the details (he's out tonight sorry!)

There are often some ads for this on e-bay but having looked at this myself it ended up being a good deal cheaper to buy a second hand motorhome - or in our case use the old van and go B & B

I use these to hire a motorhome for LeMans each year, they seem happy to do short term hire, unlike most who only 7 day sat-sat.

If you're going to use one 12 times a year, buy a second-hand one...

Mine costs me £350 per month (with 6 months deposit) and it's a 7 metre top of the range low profile with a a garage at the back, fixed King size double bed above, all mod-cons (including a fridge/freezer and separate shower for example)! Running costs are minimal (servicing has to be cheap for dealers to get fleet van business) They also hardly depreciate, so if you didn't need it after a season you would get most of your money back if you look after it.

buy a mazda bongo, £3.5 large from the free ads, 2.5 turbo diesels to pull your racer. cozy, comfy, reliable and practical, automatic, air con, ipod connect, electric roof, rear kitchen, fridge, leisure battery. i lurve mine ( used it for the oulton race meeting last weekend) - perfect and cheap, and going up in value due to the cost of importing them - -so you'd probably make money on them.

Cheers all. Problem is space really. Hence not buying. I had a sprinter but no where to put it.

It's run by a current driver who does international stuff, he knows what he's going and I'm 99% sure he has something with a towing hitch too!

a bongo makes a perfectly usable family car. i have forced the wife into using my camper so that i can sell her car to fund the racing. she likes it ( the camper that is )

having said that, £300 + for a w/e hire of a van, you could book a very nice spa typre hotle near the track for that sort of money. makes no sense to me ?

I know what you mean, but my situation is a bit complex. I do 40k miles a year in my work car. So have a cheapo economic run about that isn't man enough to tow.

I have two weekend cars.

No space for a van anymore. Hence the hiring and towing with camper. I've also done the hotel thing for years. I want to spend more time at the circuit

Rob Garofall, who races a Juno in the Speed UK series, has a company that hires these out. Really transforms a race weekend having somewhere comfortable to retreat to in the paddock

to be fair, that fact that you have no space is down to the fact that you have two weekend cars. i too do 40k miles per year in a mondeo - which is big enough to tow. i have a house with a single garage but double length driveway, so bongo, plus mondeo and race car fit on ok. sounds like if a camper really was a priority you would make space by selling one of the weekend cars?

I don't want my situation solving - i've thought it through biggrin

I just want to hire a camper van for the weekends that I race - as I want somewhere nice to be and I want to be closer to the circuit.

Essentially i've tried everything else. Professional transport, Landrover Disco as a tow car......not having two weekend cars.....etc etc

I'm quite happy with the camper idea.

Its not a huge problem - if I can't get one I'll just get professional transport - but I wanted to spend more time on my car next season.

edited to add - both my nice cars are in the garage......where a van wouldn't fit anyway.

Had a similar situation, went from towing with a Disco and staying in Travel-lodge type hotels, we tried to find a motorhome hire co. with tow bars, usually the first thing they asked was "what are you towing ?"
usually followed by "click bbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrr"

We ended up buying a motorhome, though most of the european units we looked at were close to the max MGVW before I added another 1500kg of car/trailer/wheels & fuel.

My only suggestion is finding another racer in a different series with no clashing dates who may "lend" you a motorhome as if they took payment would be for hire & reward and possible insurance implications.
